plan for economical motoring

I need a more economical motor for the daily jaunt (130 miles round trip ). Not really keen on most diesels -- they're usually too low powered, or too expensive, and most of them are FWD. The only RWD ones are older Mercs and Beemers, or 4WD Audis and they fetch serious money.

So, what I thought is perhaps I could try to pick up a face-lift Legacy saloon (don't like estates) 2.0/2.2 NA for <£3k and have it LPG converted. Anyone got an idea what MPG a 2.0/2.2 Legacy will do normally anyway? I know DrEvil's got an NA Scoob -- I assume it does >28mpg. If it's around 35mpg there doesn't seem that much point in having it converted.

What's the deal with Legacy revisions, anyway? Parkers say the old model ran 1989-1999 and the new one was from 1998 onwards, but Autotrader have facelift ones on L and M plates -- are these imports?

This may be totally daft but I will mention it anyway. ow about a boost controller and set it to a very low boost. Subaru engines don't seem to be very fuel efficient in any guise.

Cool

Strange but true, my MY01 Legacy 2.5GX was giving well over 30 mpg and was great for long motorway cruises (bags of tourque and a great overtaker), don't know why I got rid actually, still on the forecourt, may make an offer to buy it back!

:-)
