Go for a Tracker. My mate had his brand new Beamer 7 stolen from his drive at 4am one morning. About an hour later, the police had tracked down and apprehended the sh1theads who had nicked it.

My point is to confirm what IanW said, that if someone really wants to steal a car they can (like my mates new BMW 7 for instance). I've heard that one of those steering wheel bar thingys is good, but I don't know which one to recommend.

I would rather leave the keys in the car and let them take it! At least that will stop the mad ***** from coming into the house for them, where my other half and little girl can be hurt. If they want the car they will get the car. It is one of the reasons why we all have insurance.

Edited to say I have a CAT 1 immobiliser / alarm and Tracker fitted anyway!

Not so much sleep, but the same principle.

My colleuge has just had her legacy stolen from the road where we park, whilst at work. She does not know what alarm system she had, but insisted it was an combined alarm/immobiliser. As this is the 4th or 5th known theft from that street, and as I park my scooby down there day in day out, it makes me feel a little nervous to say the least.

Question is;
If Joe Tealeaf gets under the bonnet & silences the siren, can he disconnect the cables and drive off ? I thought Cat 1 were supposed to be immune to this type of 'attack'. This BTW is what happened to my collegue, as someone saw 2 guys under the bonnet but assumed they were doing some work.

Trackers are good, but they come into play after the car is stolen. Would like that to be avoided in the first place.

If someone REALLY wants to steal your car then they will find a way to get it.

All you can do is take precautions, such as a Alarms, and Immobilsers, and visible deterants like Disclocks etc...

Trackers will help to locate the vehicle should someone bypass the other security.

I have a Toad Cat 1 Alarm & Immobiliser on my MY95

2 weeks ago 3 guys tried to nick it off our drive (1st night it was left out of the garage)

They couldn't get it so decided to key it all the way down the side

Scary thing is:

3 days later 3 guys walk into a pub in Liverpool and shoot some guy dead, and the getaway car - a stolen Subaru Impreza stolen about 5 miles from where I live.

Could be coincidence or could be the same 3 guys that tried to get mine, luckily I wasn't in otherwise I would have ran out.

Mother f****rs might have shot me!!!!

That's enough for me I've decided to get rid and buy something normal

Along with your alarm/immobilizer, tracker and disclock I suggest the barrier deadlock, you can never have too much security IMHO

You say that TRACKER comes into play after the car has been stolen,not true.......

Ive had 8(yes eight)false alarm phone calls from TRACKER,not nice at 4 o,clock in the morning "hello MR ******** this in TRACKER UK we have an activation on your Subaru,is it still secure".[img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

The installation engineer has been out after 4 false alarms and adjusted the motion censor,but hasnt cured the problem,so Im still waiting for him to come out again after 4 weeks of waiting.

Suggest you try someone else......Im thinking of asking them to come out and take thier system out,give me a re-fund and going with someone else.

It's not my car being stolen that's bothering me. It's the damage the thieving little s***s cause while trying. I've already had my driver door lock bust open and the door panel dented this week. They won't get the car moving but it's still gonna cost me money fixing the damage.

I think you're ok on the passive defences, you might want to consider buckshot for close range outdoors or birdshot indoors (less change of collateral penetrative damage through walls).

Either that or snipe at them with 5.56mm or 7.62 NATO as they drive away in your car

Joking aside, won't be that long until the majority of organised car jacking / thefts from property will involve the use of guns

Unfortunately, we will never have the right to keep and bear arms to protect ourselves and property in this country, unlike the US where it is part of the constitution.

Just walk away if confronted; it's not worth it just for a car...

Yes, I agree if they want it badly enough they will get it.
And yes, trackers are advisable - I did have one in the UK!

But, there is a spectrum of scum out there, ranging from low skill oppotunistic, to highly organised "stolen to order, exported in hours" type operations.
Asking about mid-range, semi skilled scum, who are semi keyed up (in the brain dept, I guess if they detach the right cables on a Thatcham Cat 1, the car will start ????

I guess one of many ways to deter them is to make this operation slow, complicated, and detectable.

Had a Thatcham Cat 1 fitted to my motor.

The guy fitting it said that within weeks, sometimes days of any new sytem being put on the market, the slags have developed a way to get around it.

Plus, he reckoned (true or not) that a few guys within the alarm/imm industry are the very guys that have your motor away.

Very Good Point Above, and that does also make me weary getting aditional security. It's a good oppotunity for potential theives to 'case' the car with the owner answering all their 'innocent' questions. OK, they might not do the dirty deed, but their mates might.

Makes this especially relevant if you have a 'stand out car'.
My sonic blue/gold wheels is pretty rare here, only seen 2 or 3 lookalikes. You certainly notice the car which is not always good !!
