Best short term method of driving a car
#1
For various reasons someone may be 'between' coming out of a company car scheme, and buying a car.
What's the most economical method getting a car for around a month in this situation?
I just got a quote off the Avis site for a Group A car - a grand for one months hire!!
Anyone got any cheaper ways?
cheers,
greg

Gregh,
I assume you mean they need a month to find a really nice car that they'd be happy to live with for the medium/ long term. Therefore they need transport for a month to tide them over.
Hiring is easy and painless except to the pocket.
Why not try going to car auction to pick up something "below book" and then sell it later. If they buy wisely they shouldn't be out of pocket in the long term and possibly could make enough to cover expenses.
Or buy a nice, cheap older car like an Alfa 164 or a Rover Vitesse and get rid of it later.

2 options really -
1 if you have current insurance for another car then go and buy a cheap car and get it added as a temporary additional vehicle. Don't spend too much money, and much as an Alfa may look cheap, remember if it is going cheap, the seller probably wants rid for a reason. Always best to look for something a bit older which has been well maintained.
Don't bother with this if you don't have current insurance, getting a 1 month policy is costly and usually more trouble than it is worth, and if you take out a 1 year policy and cancel after 1 - 2 months you will only get 60%-75% of your mony back usually, and sometimes less, again, too much hassle really.
2 Go to you local dealer/small car hire place and do a deal for a month or 2. I was offered a Saxo for £75 per week if I was taking ot for 4 weeks or more, by my local car hire place. Avis and the big companies don't do much discount for long periods, the small companies often do.

Hi Greg - Long time no see.
If you are talking about a lease car that you would be getting in a month, then there may be a chance that the lease company would loan you a car (for a price). Or when I was in the same situation I hired a Mondeo from FasterHire on Easterly Road for £120.00 per week. I think they do Fiesta's for about £75.00 per week.
Cheers

Greg,
if its only a month, maybe taxis will be a cheaper option?
I'll be hitting a similar problem in two weeks - call/drop me an e-mail and i'll let you know my plans!!

Bus pass?
Only kidding, but seriously do any of your mates have an excess amount of vehicles (ie # of residents in household<# of cars in household) and would be willing to let you borrow[1] a motor for a month?
[1] Well perhaps rent for a nominal fee.

Similar advice to pslewis, except I'd splash out a bit and get a £100 Sierra, preferably with some shagged remoulds on the back - then exploit the super sideways RWD "handling" to have a laugh and terrorise shoppers at the roundabout outside the local Tescos
