Hi Bas, shortened plates are legal if the font and spacing are correct. If you need any made I can help. I'll e-mail you more details. This simple web page explains a bit more........

Cool

Finally decided to get myself a cherished number plate.

I've seen a few cars with 'shortened' plates i.e. the blank bits on the ends cut off, and was wondering if these are legal.

If so will any place do these for me or is there someone in particular who does them?

Cheers

Bas

DVLA has full specs but IIRC it's an inch each side of the letters/numbers to the edge.

bad news is that the new plates must display the dealer/company name at the bottom and their postcode in the corner which means that cutting the plate makes it illegal unless you get the company to cut the perspex and print the code in a different place - but this is unlikely 'cos the perspex covers will be printed in large batches! Bleedin shame!
