Buying a Catalunya
#1
Hi,
I have been thinking about buying a scooby for some time now. I found a Catalunya that I like the sound of on the Subaru site.
Obviously it is really hard to make an informed decision unless you know the condition of the engine, but what do you guys think of the Catalunya. Do you think it is worth £14000 seeing as it has done 40000 miles?
Also having read the FAQ on the SIDC website it says that the colour is black with red metallic flecks. Do they mean that there is red paint mixed in with black? If someone could clarify this it would be great.
Here is the URL to the car description:

I think 14k is probably a bit too much for one in today's market.
I have seen numerous MY99 UK cars sell for about the 14k mark, with fewer miles, and even a few STi IV's for the same money, and would have thought 12.5k from a dealer would be closer to market value, 11 - 12k privately.

You can get a MY98 / MY99 for that price. Shop around if I were you and take a few for test drives b4 you buy. You soon find out which one is a dog.
Also 45k is the big service so you are talking £450 not far down the road.
Cheers

The black with metallic red fleck is basically black and if you catch the car in the right light the mettalic part is actually red. Very effective during sunsets
I had no.74 which did me proud for 3 years and I traded in 18 months ago for just over £16k against a P1. I always thought it was special as it was the only black UK Impreza Turbo (and only 200 of them) available.
£14k does sound a bit expensive though.

Well, its got Gold Wheels so get them to knock a chunk off the price so you can put some proper wheels on for starters.
Seriously, £14K??? - nah, way too much - get a nice 'last of the old shape' for the same money with half the mileage AND the remainder of the warranty!!!
Looking forward to keeping the residual up once you buy, dont play with mods., dont buy the Pink Mica, dont buy an Import (EU or Jap!), dont put those image sapping gold wheels on either and you should be OK!!

Hi spinydevil
I bought one for £12,500 from a subaru dealer 2 months ago with a 12 months Subaru Used car warranty. My car had 44K miles on with a FSH from main dealers.
£14K sounds a lot to me ..
On my car it came with different Gold alloys (prodrive 6 spoke on 205/45 tyres ) and a higher spoiler with a brake light).
Looks superb and I am well happy with it.
Only downer is the insurance at £950 fully comp with 7 years no claims !!! no convictions and 30 years old.
I never paid that much on my Sierra cossie !!
Cheers

Pete Lewis,
If i had a quid for every time you've told people on here to avoid imports, i could have retired by now.
My import is;
a) not stolen
b) quicker than most UK versions and
c) much better equipped
As are the imports of the majority of people on here.
So, Mr Devil, don't discount imports if you're casting your net wider. Sure, you might need to check it's provenance, but of course since the "big scare" a couple of months ago that's now an absolute breeze.
The Catalunya's a great special edition, but unless you really feel the need to pay up for sparkly paintwork, £14 will get you a whole lot of newer and/or lower mileage Mk1 Scoob.
Take your time - there are way more sellers than buyers out there still.

Spinydevil,
14k seems a lot to me too ... I have a Catalunya which I bought last October ... and paid less than that for it and it had about 45k mileage on it ... and had already had the big service ... think you may need to negotiate a bit ...
Mind you bearing in mind that they are becoming an increasingly rare species ... could be worth snapping up

Thanks for all your replies.
Saved me from making a bit of a mistake. In the mean time I have found another Catalunya with only 17,500 miles on the clock for 1 grand less.
Just gotta sell my car now and the it will be mine all mine. Unless it gets sold of course, doh!

Plus I actually think gold alloys look good on black and blue mica imprezas.

Thanks again
