Unhappy

Hi,
Checking my tyre pressures this morning I found a beautiful and enormous nail buried into the side wall of my offside front tyre. big time p****ed off.

Had it checked out to confirm my fears that it couldn't be repaired and the guy who inspected it told me that both the front tyres need replacing anyway. 5mm center 2mm sides at the front. 5mm all round on the back.
Now this is a MY99 car with 4000 miles on the clock. i haven't even had my first 6 month service yet.
So am i driving too hard or could this be a geometry problem?

Also i was quoted £165 each for 205 50 16 Bridgestones and £135 each for 205 50 16 Pirelli p zeros. should i take the pirellis and change all four, or is it safe to replace front 2 bridgestones?

Need help please,

SteveM

It could be a tracking problem. The tyre dealer should have been able to give you an indication whether the wear is from tracking, underinflation or just driving hard. I think however that you would have had to do a track day at Silverstone to get that sort of wear. You must have no more that 2mm difference over the 4 tyres. new tyres come with 7mm tread usually, so you are right on the limit of being able to get just 2. If you are just getting 2 make sure you get the same make tyres.

If you have 2mm on both side of both tyres at the front and 5 middle in the middle of both tyres, its sounds liek they were underinflated, and were running on the sidewalls ? If however its only one side of both tyres then its probably geometry ?

you did rather well to get 6 months out of your tyres ! On my Mini I run Yoko's 008's stick like dog dirt to your shoes! I go through 3 sets on the front each year. But never needed to replace the backs yet - I suppose I just have not been trying hard enough eh - oh come on Mini's are hardly tail happy now are they. I hardly ever spin the wheels, just down to hard cornering and hard braking. How do the Yoko's go like on Scooby's ? anyone tried them or suggest any other makes ?

Philip

I am currently bedding-in a set of Yoko AVS Sports on my Scoob. They seem very chuckable with some nice driver feedback & progressive on the limit handling. My previous set were Bridgestone SO2's.

Steve,

I recently purchased a front pair of S02 PP's from Wheelbase in Chadderton (Oldham) -
£274.00 balanced, fitted, inc. valves and vat.

cheers
Howie

btw. the original front pair were stuffed - 5mm in the centre, 3mm outeredge 0mm inner edge - geometry settings in my case.

Wink

I got 4 SO2 PP's from Tyres Northampton (who will be at Donnington) for £415 a month or so ago.

By the way, NEVER mix different tyres, even in pairs. I ran SO2's front & SO1's rear for a while after a blow out on an SO1 as I was too tight to replace all 4. They seemed fine until I went to MIRA -
