Bloody Fast Sport
#1
Yesterday on the way home from work, fella pulls up behind me in one of those last of the line lemon MY00 Sports. When the lights went green gave the old WRX a bit of toe, and although left him easily on acceleration, it came back up to me bloody quick.
The bloke must have been a much faster driver than me agreed, but seriously, I was well impressed by the speed of that car over a couple of miles on a twisty main road.
When the old insurance quote gets too over the top, it might not be such a tumble to downgrade to a Sport after all!!
Anybody else had comparisons like this?
Cheers,
Rich
PS...if it was you....give us a shout...expect you live near Tonbridge?

hmm, near tonbridge you say, I'll have to keep me eyes peeled as I'm not a million miles away from there.
One thing to bear in mind is that it might not have been a sport, could have been a turbo with a sport bonnet, but that's longshot. usually only done if you have a front mount intercooler (daft otherwise!)
So, where you located then? (email me if you wish.

Im right near Tonbridge, Ill have to be careful, usually give Sports a mocking, holier than thou downstare, but this one sounds quick.
Are you sure you werent trying to pull of in 3rd?
For this sentence, please read "smilie", as it isnt working, and Im not being serious about you pulling off in 3rd. Thanks

Rich,
A certain Mr.Felstead can regularly be seen terrorising Turbo drivers in his Sport!! When driven well, they cover ground very well indeed! That's not to say that I think JF is a quick driver or anything! LOL

I've had a yellow Sport as a loan car a couple of times. My Wife and I were very impressed. It sure aint no Turbo, but it pulls hard and is great fun to drive. Loads better than the Wife's Ford Focus Zetec 1.8 (don't the Press keep harping on about them...) and nothing went wrong or fell off in the Sport, unlike most trips in the Focus (most unreliable car we've ever had).
The Sport's an ideal 2nd car for us, except my Wife wants a TVR. My ex-wife liked Micras; another reason why I'm glad we got divorced...

I had a Sport pull away from me on the corners. I didn't know the road whereas the 40 something woman knew them like the back of her hand.
Driver skill and local knowledge will win every time. Unless your a nutter.

LOL
I have said it a hundred times (probably).
A well driven Sport is a match for any turbo cross country.
Believe me, i wasnt sweating, quite the oposite actually. I had a slight *cough* weight penalty with me too. LOL

JF, I don't really want to know how you can do the opposite of sweating but your cold (hence the coughing) may have something to do with it
Oh, and I had myself in the car as a weight disadvantage.

I disagree. We have a Sport and a Turbo. The Sport, whilst not boasting significant acceleration, handles extremely well – it’s always impressed me. However, as the same driver along the same country roads but driving a Turbo, is a significantly different story – I am surprised at how easily it takes the corners where I am at the limit of the Sport. Different league. <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:<HR>Originally posted by VKL723:

P.S. If plans go right, I'll be a WRX driver soon![/quote]

Thanks for the interesting posts guys..
Seems like John was probably the bloke in the Sport after all,... maybe he got lost on his way from Congleton to Macclesfield!
Good to see there's a few BBS guys in and around Tonbridge. I'm up for a meet aswell. (Markus...you have mail)
As I said, it was one of those end of the line lemon sports...they had one in the showroom at Lancasters Sevenoaks for a while. It obviously goes really well considering its 100hp down!! If I remember rightly, these Sports came in black or lemon and imho, the lemon was a lemon.
They have the same AWD set up right, but are they ultimately as quick in the bends given the different tyre profile? More sidewall flex and all that.
The driver confidence OR madness seems to make up for this anyway.
Cheers,
Rich

I've got a sports and I can't seem to get it past the 120MPH mark (that's the listed top speed in the manual). I can't believe the cars only got 115BHP !
Anybody got any recommendations for any performance upgrades apart from getting a turbo ?! The car's only had a tyre change to 17"'s.

Had a sport with 16" alloys - handled very well but not a patch on my rb5. Same roads, same corners just a whole lot faster and still not got the tyres squeeling
sports nutter - get an exhaust and better induction. Failing that get a chip. Failing that buy the turbo you know you want
