Just wondering if anyone out there wished they spent more of their hard-earned on an official UK car. Anyone had a nightmare with warrentees or unfreindly dealers etc.

hoho! No.

MY00 from Holland in November 99, and loving it massively.

I daresay if the MY00 turns out to have an issue like MY98 piston slap in two years time, I'll be crying into my beer...

...but, at the moment, I get decent treatment from dealers.

Never had to make a warranty claim, and I wouldn't really want to as that's can be "fun", particularly clutch judder.

Not when I saved £4700 and got delivery within two days! - rest of delay was in paperwork.

Nearly out of one year warranty. Belgian - so has year 2 and 3 warranty, but I suspect it would be a hassle claiming from it.

Thumbs up

No worries at all.

Me and my dad had a grand day out to Gertjan's garage.

Pleasant drive back to Ostende

First class on the catamaran. Three course meal.

Concept 600 fitted the next day by Maximum Impact in Leeds

After above expenses, still saved about 6K

Fond memories.....

anyone fancy a bulk purchase on a "Smart Car"?????

Nick, in all seriousness what sort of money do you think we'd be looking at - I know a few people who may be intested (well, at least 2 myself included)

As with the rest I've had no more probs with UK dealers than I otherwise would.

And how could I regret saving thousands of pounds?

Definitely not!

My MY2000 EU Import cost £15500 fully inclusive (VAT, alarm, ferry, hotels, etc.)

I sold my UK Dealer Supplied MY97 to a dealer for £14100. Not bad considering I only paid £17800 new (got a good discount )and had it nearly three years.

I couldn't have easily afforded a new UK supplied MY00 so it was either hang onto the MY97 or go the EU route.

Nothing has gone wrong with the car....yet! The UK dealer I use (F R Pulleyn) have no problem with the fact that the car is an import.

I will definitely do the same next time!

Cheers,

Ian.

Cool

Yep its a no brainer

Had mine a year now no problems

Its probably worth what I paid for it now !!

lots of scare stories about

Bottom line

SAME car
1 year warranty
no alarm

and thats it

Tal (also a Gertjan Boy)

we should organise a trip to see him with the Scoobs now that would be a meet !!

MY00 April 2000 from Holland. Had a great day out and saved £5k. Successful warranty claim for a new clutch at 8 months. Most dealers are fine, some a bit grumpy (their problem). Re-sale value might be a bit lower after 3 years than a UK car but not £5k's worth!

Would do it again tommorrow if I was about to swap.

Cool

Basically I had 15k to spend on an Impreza, at the time I could have either a UK supplied 3 year old car with possibly 12 months dealer warranty or a BRAND NEW Dutch supplied car with 12 months warranty.

You don't have to be Einstein to work it out !!

The only reason I asked was to shut certain people up who argued that you wiuld regret importing in the long run. I have already ordered my car and will pay £17k ( ) for a MY02 when it arrives in December. Never doubted my decision for a nanosecond.

Chirak

Please e-mail me to discuss this further. I cant email you because I dont have your address. You should be ablel to access mine if you are admin.

I am interested in importing a smart car. Not quite yet. Still need to pay off the scoob.

Uk Prices for smarts seem to be at least 2K more than european prices. I have done any real homework on this yet. My comment was in jest though my intentions are serious.

There is a new EU smart that is disel. The enonomy is excellent. An excellent counterpart to the scoob...

A question for all you who have done this...when you buy the car from Gertjan at the price quoted, do you then have to pay VAT in the UK ?? and what other expences are involved.

thanks in advance --john--

John,
yes, vat. and then an alarm, plates, registration, road tax. approx £17,500 (my01), its a good saving over UK prices.
one year g'tee from holland, belgium ones come with a three year g'tee (of dubious value ?!?)
i've no regrets about buying mine from Frits Kempen. in fact wouldn't have bought it at UK prices

When you order it you specify it is for the UK, and do not get charged tax on it (unless you buy it from Germany, in which case you have to pay it, then claim it back later ) Once you have it back in the UK you get a couple of pieces of paper from your local DVLA office, fill them in, return them. These then get sent off to HQ in Dover who do there stuff, issue you with your number plate details, and through the post will appear a piece of paper asking for your import tax
