Personal Reg plates
Just a quick question...what's the view on cherished reg. plates. I'm thinking of one that relates to the car as opposed to the owner's details.e.g My'01 owner with a 'WRX' plate..
These sort plates only cost from £250 upwards so are they naff or a worthwhile buy...??.

Gareth:
Personal plates are a very difficult subject - some people love them, others can't stand them.
We have 5 plates in out family, and they do hide the age of a car, and if you are a 'local' driver people tend to know who the car belongs to (can be a good thing bearing in mind theft problems).
Decent plates can be a good investment, my father purchased 1 *** 20 years ago for £500 (including the mini the plate was on) and has had it valued at £25,000 recently.
I (personally) like 'em and have NEVER thought "I wish I didn't have a private plate".

I've got three:
EDS 661B - this was on my Mini, I like it becuase it means I could get away with black and silver plates.... would probably look not so good on the scooby
P16 ONK - this looks like PIG OINK
- pretty funny
S66 XXX - cool, looks good

Gareth i've had ** WRX on my car STI v5 for over 2 yrs now, it cost £250 like you mention. I don't think there is any reason for them to rise in price like the 555, 5coob and WRC did. So an investment it isn't.
But if you can get the 1 letter, 1 number WRX like what i have you can shorten your plate increase cooling and boy does it look good!!

They can add a lot to the overall look of the car. Although I disagree with doctoring them to make them read as wished...
Found mine whilst looking for one for my girlfriend, quite by accident.
S600 OOB
A mere £250 from the DVLA. It was an engagement present too, so I didn't even have to shell out any cash (except for the plates themselves)

*Touch Wood* Since buying my current car, and sticking on a private number plate, I haven't been pulled over for one of those "there's a stolen Impreza in the area" by the Police!
My old car with standard type number plate, was pulled a bit. Record was twice in less than a week, for a "check"!
Strange thing was I pointed out to them where the VIN number was!
The plate I wanted was T4 NGO, but that went up for auction, and sold for more than the price of a new Impreza!
I remember calling up DVLA when the T-reg's were released, and they wanted £1300 for T8 NGO. 8 is a lucky Chinese number, 4 is unlucky!!
But still to expensive for me at the time!
I called up 6 months later on a whim, and it was still there but for £800! It was fate, so I had to buy it!!

Only problem was that number plate couldn't be used on my old R-reg Scoob, so I had to buy a newer car!! The plate cost me £19,800 in the long run!!!

That said I was told that T4 RTY/T8 RTY would be better for me and my car!!

I had ** VWG on my Golf GTi (which was my first new car). When I upgraded to the Scoob everyone said I had to keep the plate so that they would recognise me. So I did.
Thought it might make the car fade away if people think it's a golf, hasn't worked so far
Mind you, got offered £800 by the VW dealer when they new I was selling, only paid £250

My plate incorporates a brand of ciggies and my initials, but to do so, I need to move 1 character to the left. Having been nicked once and cautioned once for incorrect spacing, the standard plate has been back on the car for 7 months. Total waste of £500 IMHO.
However, couple of weeks ago, saw ideal his 'n' hers plates for me and Mrs DavidLewis for £250 and £450. Tempted to put them on hold for a rainy day
