Hiya Jay,
things that you must consider before buying a scoob.
Jap imports only take super unleaded fuel!!
jap imports cost more to insure than the uk car!
Parts are not as available for jap imports as they are for the uk cars and have to be ordered from japan which could take time
Fuel will cost you, along with servicing (twice a year/7500 miles, which ever first but still twice a year)
it varies from around 100 pounds to up to 500 pounds depending on what needs doing and at what interval.
Mods.....
These will come trust me!
They will add to your insurance and thus your running costs, ie new alloys....
you cant buy cheap tyres for these cars, the average 17 inch tyre is going to cost you 100 quid per corner, 60 quid ones will just put you in a ditch
Yes it seems quite a doom and gloom reply but owning and running are two different things, better to run one than to own one and cant run it but i hope that you can afford to cos they are great cars
Check out

I'm currently looking to buy a new car and one of the vehicles on my wish list is a 95 WRX Impreza. I only have one reservation and that is the cost of maintaining it!
As far as I'm aware they are all imports, does the import share the same parts as the UK spec Subarus or am I going to find it a nightmare to get parts for ?
So anyone got any experiences of there own they can share ?

Hi - had my MY97 WRX since february and so far its been not too bad. Nothing has gone wrong and the 15k service it just has was £140 all in with nothing to report.
A lot of the parts are the same/similar but uk dealers will not touch imports so you will have to get it serviced at a specialist..there's loads of them about these days though. Also getting parts is no problem most of the time, again there are a fair few specialists who have/can get quickly the parts.
I have taken out an 'insurance policy' to cover me incase anything goes on the car. This is £240 per year and is in my opinion worth having for peace of mind as it covers just about everything except 'consumables' - pads/discs/exhaust etc.
Only advice to give is buy a good one...you'll love it

Jay99, Go get one now!!!!!
I have had my 92K since October and it has cost me about £1200 in total this includes a 6000 mile service and 60,000 major service (£400+). My costs have been due to wear and tear to do with age but to be honest it been great for its age.
I'd recommend Scoobysport in Basildon, Essex.
Your biggest worry will be how much it costs in fuel!
you want big power, you has to pay big for it.

The consumables you mention you can get anywhere, no need to look outside the UK!!
A quick look at the banner ads on here will reveal specialist suppliers that will have most things in stock for next day delivery. Put it this way, you will be very unlucky if you have to wait for a part to be shipped in from Japan, this really isn't a factor to infuence your decision IMO.
About the warrenty thing, there are alot of scare stories about these "insurance" policies most of which, unfortunately, are true
Use the search function on this site, surf the SIDC site and get researching!! It will pay off in the long run
Good luck

Hi,
I've had my 97 wagon for 2 years 4 days and the totals costs over the 2 years that I have had it go like this.
Mileage 35498
Insurance £1800
Servicing and parts £1577
including £230 for a broken headlight (ouch)
Mods £411
Petrol £4365
Car tax £300
Total over 24months £8453
This averages out at £352pcm or £0.24 p/mile but I do cover a lot of miles and this does not include depreciation on the car which is likely to be £200-300 pcm so probably about £0.50 p/mile including depreciation for me.
this would average out at £3k running costs and £3K depreciation over a 1 year period if you were to cover 12,000 miles.
generally I would say servicing is the least of the worries in terms of expense, most expensive one so far has been £370 for the 45K service, this disappears into into insignificance when petrol costs can be up to £300 per month.
Hope that the above is of interest and not too sad and off putting. Never added it all up before may be I'll be a little easier on the gas!!
Regards Mitch

Clutch - £350 - £600
Plugs - £50 - £100
Brake pads £16 - £80
Service - £120 - £550
Oil filter - £11
Had Clutch & Gears replaced when bought otherwise in 2years its cost me £450 in servicing and £60 in oil between services £52 in 4x wheel alignment, £40 in brake pads, and my centre diff has a problem at the mo, cheaper than my previous Peugeot 405.

93 WRX had it just over 2 years.
Major service last year, including all belts & everyhting came to about 600 notes.
Now the clutch is heading south + other bits I want to do will be 1K - 1.5K
But the car is cheapish, value about 7K, so getting the amount of fun out of another 7K that I get currently would be impossible unless I spent KKKKs
Do it you wont regret it.

Thanks everyone, all the advice is greatly appreciated. Now all I need to do is find a good one.
Do you think £8-9K will do it or am I dreaming, I've seen a few for this money now but not sure if this is the right sort of money.

8-9k shoud secure you a WRX between 95 and 97, or possible an Early STi (I or II at a push). There are loads about, just look on Autotrader, no shortage, so take your pick and go for the tidiest and most well maintained model you can. Mileage isn't too much of a problem providing it has been well maintained, but the Jap cars often have lowish miles anyway. Be very picky, there are plenty out there...

Hi Jay..
Do it mate!!.. your budget is realistic and the pro's of Jap spec ownership far outweigh the cons..
The vast majority of routine service parts, brakes, filters etc swap over from later years of UK spec cars... These jap cars really aren't the enigma that they are made out to be.
Insurance is a little more.. Believe it or not, some of this is down to the fact that Jap cars have different interior spec and colours which can make those repairs a little harder.
If you would like any (Free ) impartial advice as to what to check on those cars the SIDC FAQ is a good place to start, or obviously we are always happy to help if we can.
Cheers
