Unhappy

Hi folks,

It is a sad day methinks, as I am pretty sure that I am going to be selling my scoob...
This as some of you know is my second one. The first cost me an arm and a leg just to get right before someone re-arranged her for me . The second hasn't been nearly as bad, but my financial state and responsibilities are starting to catch up with me
I have a girl who I live with and love very, very much. We are only renting and she is really pining after a place of our own again. She is very understanding and loves the Scoob as much as I do, but I have got to put a stop to all of the modding etc (not to mention the fortune that I spend on pc parts!)
I am 99.9% sure that I can get 9k for my girl as she is now, so I will have upto 9k to play with. I know that I should be going lower and buying something cheap and pocketing the rest, but I can't bring my self to do that. I am mainly interested in:
A slightly lower insurance group (20 currently)
No octane booster necessary
Lower fuel consumption and less expensive maintainance needed
Still needs to be quick tho

I don't really want to have my cake and eat it!

Damn, I am really going to miss that turbo kick

I have been toying with the idea of an Integra Type-R.

Ideas for a replacement etc welcome.

Cheers,

Nick

Not sure if you could get an Octavia RS for 9k, but possibly an earlier Octavia 1.8T then chip it, easily get RS performance levels.

I am not planning on getting another scooby mate. I have had a Jap WRX and have a fairly meaty STI2 currently.

Get an Ibiza Curpra 1.8T.

Lovley car, can get a 1.5yo one for about 9K, and has all the extras (ie Climate, Leather etc)

My mates got one, it runs standard at 156Bhp, but this is easily upped.

There is also a type R, but I doubt you could buy one for 9K.

Also consider the Prelude 2.2 Vtec. FAF, and also has 4 wheel steer . Thats in you price band too.

I'm in a similar situation to yourself Mr Footlong... had a look round a Leon Cupra at the weekend, very impressed with the build and equipment levels - test driving it this weekend, road test reports are positive, but I'm picky... Second hand you may be able to get one around 9?

Just been through the same pain with departing from the scoob. What to do for a car was hard. To make you laugh I needed for the next 12 months to have a car with no finance, eco, low tax and warranty.
Well managed to clear the 3500 outstanding finance on the scoob and buy.....wait for it.....ciroen zsara 1.4i 2001 for 4995 with 2 yrs citroen warranty, aircon, tax. GUTTED!!

Took the car to cornwall and almost crunched it due to lack of power which I wasn't used to after 2 yrs in the scoob.

New house = no toys but it should only be a yr and and then another scoob

On that budget Integra Type R, Clio 172 or 306 GTi6.
Although the newest and quickest car will be a chipped Ibiza Cupra. Not the best handler but they really do go like stink, and you get the nice turbo power delivery you've grown accustomed to.

Dont all laugh at me BUT a Nissan Primera GT about 1999 vintage wouldnt cost more than, what? £6k? Not a bad car at all - had one before the Scooby. 150BHP make sure its a hatch, it has half leather, Air, Electric Sunroof, Computer, toys and toys and is as reliable as a Subaru!! Absolutely NO smiles per Gallon however

The seats do hold a certain charm for me coming from a 106XSI and GTI. Now those I could really handle
I don't think that I would find a turbo ibiza or Leon in my price bracket tho . Well, maybe the leon.

Keep those ideas coming

Cheers,

Nick

Do just the Cupra 'R's come with a turbo? OR do the cupra's too?

Mr. Footlong.

They both have turbos. Its the same engine as the Golf GTI, or Audi TT.

Ibiza all the way.

Also another plus point is that they have a BBS too.

http://www.seatcupra.net

As you can see, there are stacks of mods.

This is a car in your price bracket. Do not think otherwise.

Question

MR2, MR2, MR2, MR2, MR2!!

Love mine to bits, fast, reliable, comfy, fun, 35-40mpg, Grp 17 insurance.

You will get a nice S/R reg for about 9k, or you could get a MY95 for about £6k and spend the rest on the house.

Come and have a go in mine if you like

I tried a SEAT Toledo a few months ago, and was quite impressed with it. So, if you need space that could be worth a look, if not, try the Leon. I've heard nowt but good things about it.

Cheers

ps. Can't you just keep the car, don't mod it any more and keep it for years. There will be no new car costs worries, so you'll save money in the long run. Girlfriend and bank manager should see the logic there!

Leon Cupra R defo.

having just tried the Honda Civic R, Clio 172, Scoob STi7, Mini Cooper S, the Cupra gets my vote for the value for money performance and total package. Its 210bhp but can be chipped to 250bhp without invalidating the warranty, 4-pot Brembos on the front, 18inch alloys, lots of safety features. Group 16.

Have fun choosing. Jen.

Together, we are paying 1600 a year for insurance!
With the old girl driving, we get about 210-220 to a tank, with me driving, about 160-170. Add the octane booster every tank.
You get the picture

If I was changing from an Impreza and wanted comparable performance, possibly better in a straight line, cheaper running costs and a lower insurance group, I'd go for a Sapphire Cosworth. Its cheap to tune compared with the Impreza, cheaper to insure and it's 4X4. If you went for a standard model, you'd have a fair bit of that 9K left in your back pocket and if you spent most of it, or the lot, you'd have one hell of a animal on your hands. You'd be glad you'd got rid of the Impreza. I admit handling isn't as good and theyr'e tail-happy compared to the impreza, but it'll be a challenge. And hey, you could join the RS owners club too

Dr Lurve "Its 210bhp but can be chipped to 250bhp without invalidating the warranty"
Who told you that? Most dealers would have a fit. Oettinger chips (through RSD www.roadandsport.co.uk ) tend to have replacement warranty cover, but any of the others would in theory invalidate the warranty. Unless you have a particularly understanding dealer who flogged you the chip in the first place (the Supercopa race series Leons put out 250bhp - maybe they can supply that chip?).
Anyway the cheapest Ibiza Cupra 20VTs (say X reg) are now down to about £9500 or less if you can barter well. Cost sod all to run, requiring a dirt cheap service once a year or 10k miles.
The power and torque to weight ratio of a chipped one is not that far off a PPP'd classic Impreza.

P.S. People suggesting shagged old Cossies, GT4s etc. seem to be missing the point. They are going to cost you nearly as much to run, maybe more if something major goes.

Cool

Dare I say it...BMW 328i

I needed a cheaper car to commute in, so swapped Scooby Turbo for 328i Coupe. 10k got me a mint 50k miler on a N plate with Schnitzer wheels, suspension, bodykit. Cheaper insurance and at 32mpg average, is a lot less thirsty!

Not everyone's cup of tea, especially in this forum!, but goes well. A totally different driving experience to the Scoob - rear end action - but a good compromise between performance and cheaper running costs.

T

p.s. I do not drive with front fogs on during the day

Autocar ran a good feature about the Escort/Sierra Cosworths in a recent issue (has the Focus RS on the cover) if you want more info.
