Unfortunately due to a new addition to family and lack of funds I've just sold my scooby... one of the hardest things i've had to do.
just thought i'd share with you guys some of the highs and lows of owning a scoob.
the hardest part of owing a subaru is the high running costs, and justifying it to the mrs.
For any of you prospective scooby owners, a scooby is not a cheap car to run...
here's a breakdown of how much my rb5 has cost over the two years of ownership & 36,000miles. (not including ice)
Bought for the bargain price of £17500 rb5 at 1 yr old & 13500 miles.
22.5k service £230 (inc front pads & disks under warranty)
30k service £420 (inc front pads)
37.5k service £502 (inc front pads & prodive brake upgrade)
45k service £302 (inc cam belt change)

8 Tyres = £860
2yrs insurance = £1500 (not as bad as some of you on here)
petrol, 36000miles = £6800 (ouch)
depreciation = £5000 (not bad in current climate)

you don't need to be einstien to work out its nearly £8000 per year to run, i know all cars have running costs but i guess i'm not used to spending so much.

here are my likes and dislikes

likes....
performance
reliability
handling superb
dealers
always felt special in it.
other scooby owners.
prodrive disks & pads.
piaa driving lamps.
quickshift box
seats.

dislikes.....

crappy build quality
fuel consumption
clutch judder
slow electric windows
bright button
flaky paint job (more chips than mcCain)
Wind noise (or was that me after curry)
tin can panels
monkey metal brake discs
standard stereo
p zero's (nearly cost me a written off car in wet)
lack of throttle response and no acceleration from below 25mph in second gear.

All in all i have thoroughly enjoyed my scoob, what a fantastic car - despite the niggles. I always couldn't wait for the next drive.
I will definitely get another in the future, if i get the chance (mrs permitting) it's not a car, but an experience. I think everyone should own one once.

I hope this may help some-one decide whether or not they can afford to keep one. If you can't, sell your wife/kids etc but you must try one.

sorry to be leaving the scooby club - i think i'll be joining the TDI club.
regards

steve s

Steve, We have just had an addition to the family and I have bought the wife a scooby! That is the way to get round her!! She used to have a puma so the 4 doors was the big selling point. She lurves her MY02 and the attention it brings. Many of the gripes you mentioned have been fixed in the new MY02 - performance not quite as good but shes a badge woman and prefers it to driving a ford!! or all too common rep-mobile BMW!!!

See you back here real soon m8y!

Unhappy

I know what you're going through Steve - my Scoob's going today and I'm absolutely gutted - I've given in to the offer of a company car and free petrol, it's going to be a quickish car but not a Scoob.

The Scoob is an expensive car to run but then again it's not just a car. Test driving replacements nothing came anywhere near feeling as special or managed to hurl itself out of corners at such a rate of notts!

To anyone thinking of owning one I'd say make sure you can afford it then go for it! When you've got one don't worry about the costs just drive it, enjoy it and make the most of it

It's been a fantastic car and one I'll really miss.

Richard
