Look at this, drink driving in OZ, new law

In some(all?) Scandinavian countries, people *are* banned for life for D & D. The limit is also 0% - ie *any* alcohol in the breath/blood.
I bet they still have a problem with it there though.

Just playing the Devils Advocate......
Drinking Driving is the cause 6% of accidents in the UK.......Speed is the cause of 6% of accidents in the UK.....in this case surely both offences should carry the same penalties......
Think on..........

Erm so WHAT is the cause of the other 88% of accidents and how come it's okay to have them?
Honestly! Stupid driving is a far greater cause of accidents than drink driving, yet the punishments for stupid driving are way less than for someone who was driving ok yet over the limit.
Sure drink-driving isn't clever, but have some perspective here and recognise the MAJOR cause of accidents.

We would never get that kind of thing here, drink driving in the UK is less of a crime than speeding.
Anyone caught drink driving should be locked up and banned for life from driving again.

I agree. Asleep in your car over the limit outside a pub with keys in pocket = minimum 1 year ban, huge fine, huge insurance premiums for years etc.
Cause an accident and you *may* get some points/fine.
I'm far more worried about sober drivers than drunk ones. Statistically you are much more likely to be killed or injured by someone sober (4 times?).
Not condoning D&D at all. I just think they (Govt/Police etc) should start focusing on INAPPROPRIATE speed and BAD driving rather than just have millions of speed cameras & speed traps.

What about the residual alcohol effect? A man was once done for drink driving despite not having had a drink for 14 hours - surely a life ban is a bit stupid in this case. Also, zero tolerance is going over the top as well. 5 pints on a friday night and you still have to worry about being banned for life when you drive on sunday morning?? Yes, very sensible. And let's not even get into the ludicrous cases of 12 month bans for people who go to sleep in their cars.

saw this somewhere on Telly cant remember channel or program but if i remember right driver had to blow into bag at regular intervals or engine would cut out with suitable warnings and giving driver time to pull over

From the article: "Drivers would be taught a special blowing technique to use the device in a bid to stop sober friends unlocking the ignition."
LOL - special blowing techniques.
