Used car buyers looking for the best in reliability should buy Japanese according to a survey by What Car?. Four of the top five places in What Car?'s 2001 Used Car Reliability Survey went to Japanese makes, although many of the cars themselves are actually made in Britain.
Experts at What Car? teamed up with warranty provider, Warranty Direct, to give buyers the low-down on 22 of the most popular makes of used car.
At the top of the table, Mazda averages just 17 warranty claims for every 100 vehicles. Japanese car makers consolidate their reputation for reliability with three others appearing in the top five.
Best of the European brands is Mercedes-Benz taking second place with an excellent record of 25 claims for every 100 vehicles. Toyota secures the bronze medal position, with an impressive 26 claims per 100 vehicles. Honda and Mitsubishi round off the top five.
At the bottom end of the table is Alfa Romeo, with a disappointing 64 claims per 100 vehicles. Land Rover just avoids the wooden spoon with 53, while Citroën comes third from bottom with a poor 50.
'It's no surprise to see a Japanese car maker top a reliability report, but for them to dominate so convincingly was something of a shock,' said What Car? editor, Steve Fowler. 'There was some good news for European makes, though, with Fiat continuing to lay to rest the ghost of reliability gremlins, and Ford also making the top 10.'
The survey didn't just look at how often used cars needed attention. It also calculated how much they cost to fix when things do go wrong. European brands make a comeback once the cost of repairs is considered. Fiats are the least expensive make to put right, with a typical cost per claim of £191. Ford comes next, with a typical repair costing £222. Vauxhall and Volkswagen share third place with an average cost per claim of £236.
Positions:
1 Mazda
2 Mercedes
3 Toyota
4 Honda
5 Mitsubishi
6 Volvo
7 Nissan
8 Fiat

11= Subaru
14 Hyundai
15 Rover
16 Volkswagen

What swings it for the fiats is that they are dirt cheap to fix.

You forget to say that they rated Subaru last on cost to fix at over £600 per claim!
