You wander onto Scoobynet and ask us not to be biased?
"You're not from round these parts, are you"
In all seriousness, welcome. There's some people who have had both, and you'll pretty much start a jihad on here with an innocent question...

C'mon guys, let's not be too biased.
Cossie:
My MY94 Cossie was a great car at the time. Sharp handling, good grip and (purely subjective) a great looker. Downsides: easy to steal (never saw it again), unreliable (several towaways in 40,000 miles and lots of parts failures), agricultural engine/drivetrain (grumbled below 2400 rpm and harsh over 5500), HUGE turbolag and very little between grip and slip when pushed, so caution necessary in the wet. Very low depreciation if well kept (so far, but might soon lose more value).
Scooby:
True comparison 2-door coupe = Type R. (v5)
By comparison, ferociously fast. Usable revs 1500-8000! Utterly reliable. Dead steering at low speeds, but progressive and adjustable handling when pressed - it fidgets and drifts but it's all so communicative. Awkward fuel needs (SUL + octane booster). Dodgy synchro on 5th. High depreciation.
For the same money you could have a good example of either. If you want nostalgia get the Cossie, the Scoob can eat it for breakfast and will run reliably for years, but will cost more to run and lose more value. If I were you I'd take the first of either which is:
1. original paint
2. no track use
3. unmodified
4. full service history
5. 1 or 2 owners

Wrong place for that question, but still, here goes an opinion:
I you want to use it, go for the scoob. If you want to spend the rest of your days riding between your mehcanic and your house, go for the cossie . Ok, I've had an MY01 for 3 weeks, so how can you ask me not to be biased ? FORGET IT !

Colleague has had both a Sapphire Cossie and a Scoob. The cossie was great for raw power when done up, but now looks very dated and did have a fair few reliability issues. Not that the Scooby was perfect. Both her and I have 'Mince-meated' the Gearboxes on ours, but wouldn't get rid of them for anything.....

If your going to keep the car standard then go for the Scoob. If you want to go for outright power and tunability go for the Cossy. Youll hit the tuning brick wall in the Scooby way before the Cossy.

Right then you worthless, no nothing cabbages!!!!!
I have as so many of you know , owned an Escort Cossie then a WRX and now back to another Escort Cossie. Unless you are a fanatical s h i t hot driver, who wants the best from a standard car, go for a Cossie.
Seriously though.........
A standard Scooby WILL kill a standard Escort! In terms of handling and power.
A beefed up Escort Cossie (which would need to include engine as well as handling) will be more than a match for a nice STi etc etc. But to do this the suspension etc etc would need some major attention.
Both cars are mega!! IMHO the Escort has more and will always have more kudos than a Scooby, even if it is behind in it's standard form.
In reliability stakes I would say that a well maintained Escort (even one pumping out 330bhp, like mine) is more reliable than a Scoob. Anybody who says otherwise is talking cack. Cossies have bad reps for reliability, but it's the scoobs that are fugging clutches, bottom ends & detting to death......not the Cossies. I put the emphasis on the escort here, because it is a newer car. An Escorts drivetrain & engine is ultra reliable (if maintained).
The handling is a matter of taste. They are both VERY different believe it or not. But both very confident. Anybody who says an Escort cannot handle (even in standard form) is talking complete tosh.
The Escort has IMMENSE lag. I like this cause of the mad rush you get at 3200rpm, when your pushing 1.6bar....with no det
I don't care what people say, but I will always believe that the Escort is/will be one of the most aggressive looking cars on the road. Definatley not dated!!!!!!
The RS FOCUS WILL not hamper values on the Escort Cossie. Did the prices drop on 3dr seirras when the sapphire came out...NO. Is the RS500 cheap to buy.....NO.
But at the end of the day it comes down to reality!!!!
Unless you are a Cossie fanatic, can keep it locked away, don't have to use it for work. Have £15,000.00+ to blow on a weekend car. THEN BUY A SCOOB!!! *******....that hurt!!!
The scoob is without doubt an awesome bit of kit and if I could afford both (and had a bigger garage) I would.
Regards,
Shaun.

Having owned bith the Cossie and an MY01 I have always regreted getting rid of the Cossie.
Cossie covered over 50k with very little trouble. The main one being that I had to have an additional alarm fitted after being assured that it had a Cat 1 alarm. I am led to believe taht no Escort Cossie's were in actual fact stolen. Servicing etc . were alaways reasonable. Also fuel consumption was always good.
I enjoy the MY01, only slight complaint is the servicing intervals and also the fuel consumption.
The Cossie was also a lot faster from A to B than the MY01.
In fact it was a lot faster than most cars from A to B.
All the best,
John Catlin.
P.S. This is about an Escort Cossie.

"Jay.B's escort doesn't get passed by anyone on the track, even with the 330 conversion."
Why do you keep saying this? I recall a certain Scoob with nearly 100bhp LESS passing him on several occasions!!!
I know he's got over 400bhp now so things may be different.
My views on Cossies are relatively well known . An Escort Cossie needs a lot more power and some handling mods to match a Scoob and that's a fact.
but, they are good-looking cars are are becoming more and more collectable. Just like any other out-dated, out-classed, out-handled and out-performed motor car!!!

Jza,
Sorry mate, but since when have GGR been the authority on Cossies mate. GGR have never done me any harm in the past, but are not as highly regarding in the Cossie arena as others.
The standard Escort has tremendous grip and the chassis is more than confident. The major downfall of the Escort is the suspension. Upgrade this with a proper set-up and all the bushes at the same time, and you have got one hell of a tight car!!
You also seem to forget that the Escort is STILL the most competative rally car on the club stages and nationals.....that's unless you have 100k to spend on an ex-works scooby. I know for a fact that generally a scooby cannot compete with an Escort on these types of rallies. The amount required to be spent on the Scoobys to bring them in line with the sorted Escorts is massive. If you don't believe me ask John Felstead, he does the service for a team!!!
I'm not trying to have an argument here, just straighten a few things out. As I have said and always will say, for an everyday car the Scooby is the one!!!
Regards,
Shaun.

I was in Graham Goodes a few weeks ago looking at their STI 7, and talked about the comparison between the two cars.
If you want the cossie to handle as well as a standard scooby, youre going to have to spend spend spend. But the cossie engine is way superior to the scoobies in terms of upgradability - 500 bhp is a realistic figure if your that mad!! The engine responds to tuning better than the scooby and is more reliable (better potential).
So i guess it boils down to do you want a very tuneable motor that needs a bit of work in the handling department (sorry Shaun - but GGR dont agree with you ) or a fantastic handling car that is a bit more limited as to what can be done to it.
Personally i cant see the point of buying a car thats no longer in production - but each to there own!!

All depends what you want from the car. I have a 360bhp 2wd Sierra Cosworth, that certainly puts the smile on my face!
Why not come down to Santa Pod on June the 17th. I'm sure you'll see all kinds there. You could talk to the owners and have a good day out at the same time.

Yeh right mate - i think you'll find they are a damn site more of an authority than YOU are!!!! I dont see you appearing on vids or in magazines. Oh - but then again you did used to race 500bhp Ford Cossies in Touring Cars didnt you.... oh sorry - no - that was Graham Goode wasnt it.
Yeh - thats right - you JUST OWN ONE..... But then i guess that makes you really "highly regarded in the Cossie arena" so Shaolin should listen to you instead. YEH RIGHT!!!!
I think GGR points were valid, and nothing ive read suggests otherwise.
"The major downfall of the Escort is the suspension. Upgrade this with a proper set-up and all the bushes at the same time, and you have got one hell of a tight car!!"
So you agree with my comment that the cossie needs work in the handling department to get it "tight"?????
I dont really know anything about rallying - the threads about a guy choosing between a cossie or scooby - so dont see thats relevant here.
Just wanted to "straighten a few things out"

Jza,
How can I put this politely!!!!!
I suggest you don't remark on a subject you quite obviously know nothing about!! I made it quite clear that I wasn't arguing, just remarking on what had been said!!!!! But as your attitude and mental co-herance is that of a minor..............
If you had an ounce of knowledge regarding Cosworths, you would realise that unless there names are either....
Graham Hathaway
Ahmed Bayjoo
Mountune
Castle Performance
Harvey Gibbs
They are not regarded as being the Cosworth Daddies!!!! That is not to say anybody else is no good.....just a perception of the industry.
I am not saying anything bad about GGR (as I had stated and have used them), just that they were not regarded as daddies for the cossie.
"Yeh right mate - i think you'll find they are a damn site more of an authority than YOU are!!!! I dont see you appearing on vids or in magazines. Oh - but then again you did used to race 500bhp Ford Cossies in Touring Cars didnt you.... oh sorry -no - that was Graham Goode wasnt it."
I didn't realise just because Graham used to drive makes him "Da Man"!!! There was me thinking that you needed engineering experience more than a driving license!!! I have spoken to Graham before on occasions and he is very knowledgeable, but I some how doubt this was the person you spoke to!!!!! But whoever you did speak to, make sure what you state is in the same context as me!!!!

But I said that on my first post you numskull??????????!!!!!! Oh dear, oh dear.
"So i guess it boils down to do you want a very tuneable motor that needs a bit of work in the handling department (sorry Shaun - but GGR dont agree with you )"
GGR don't agree with what????? I had already stated that the Escort needed handling changes...AGAIN IN MY FIRST POST!!!!
All I stated was that as a standard car it is still competant. I never said it was as competant as a standard scooby, quite the opposite actually.
"I dont really know anything about rallying - the threads about a guy choosing between a cossie or scooby - so dont see thats relevant here."
Your telling me you don't!!! In fact what DO YOU KNOW!!!!????? This was stated just to give some idea (even though not directly comparable) into the fact that the Escort is a mega bit of kit and in competition is still one of the daddies.
I suggest next time you remark on somebody who is trying to help.......
a) You put your reading glasses on, as you have obviously got the sight sense of Mr Magoo and Stevie Wonder.
b) Don't come across ignorant.
c) Keep your dummy tied around your neck, at least that way you won't start crying next time you lose it.
d) Before you quote what a company say's, make sure it is in the correct context.
e) Stop reading MAXPOWER mags and videos.

Apologies for this, but you know sometimes.....................

You're such a moody Yeti!!!!
Jza was simply saying that GGR remarked that the standard Escort Cossie is way behind the Scoob in the handling dept. Anyone who knows anything about both cars would agree.
You've stated that a standard Escort Cossie is actually quite a good handling car, which nobody else seems to agree with.
Besides, aren't the companies you mention predominantly engine tuners? I certainly don't hear of many 'normal' Cossie owners taking their cars to Mountune either!
Go and make yourself a cup of Ovaltine.
