I have been looking 4 some time to buy a 2 dr, sonic blue scooby, but I am confused when I see a car of the same year, eg 98 Type R with a pink badge and a 98 WRX STi with the black badge. Are they both the same thing, (engine wise) with different body mods??

Hmmm, Type R is 2 door Coupe, with variable centre diff and pink front badge , sounds like the STi you have seen is a 4 door, engine wise they will be the same as long as the STi is an STi and not just a WRX.

A nice Sonic Blue 2 door (P1) that happens to be for sale http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadid=107679

The Impreza has one of the most complicated model histories with all the variations and limited editions. Apart from the P1 above you are looking at Japanese imports if you want a 2 door.
  • WRX - standard Jap car, 2 or 4 door or wagon, 276 BHP
  • WRX Sti - Also 2dr/4dr/wagon Higher reving engine than WRX, uprated brakes, suspension, better equipment levels
  • WRX Sti Type R - 2dr coupe only, As Sti but driver adjustable centre diff. and intercooler water spray (at the expense of ABS because no room for both reservoirs under the bonnet)
  • WRX Sti Type RA - 2dr, light weight, less equipment, shorter gearing, closed deck engine, roof vent, still has radio + air con etc but usually the starting point to build a rally car.

Also in Japan they like buying extra bits of plastic and there are loads of different grille badges you can get so these little details can be misleading. There are also limited edition versions of all of the above and all will vary slightly with model year or version number for the Sti anyway.

Also the 22B both UK and Jap versions, wide bodied 2 dr coupe, expensive, rare, bigger capacity engine than all other imprezas (2.2 L) only in Sonic Blue.

Now I understand. So where they write Type R, they really mean WRX STi Trpe R. And where i've seen ads for sale and the cars have pink badges, black badges, low rear spoilers or high rear spoilers, perfomance is the same(280 bhp).

Thankx for this, hopefully I will buy 1 on Sat. Cheers

Wink

Its 276bhp and thats only on 100 ron fuel (jap imports need a min of super unleaded fuel, 97 ron but optimax is 98.6 ron so its better and cheaper but would also put a bottle of octane booster in there too!)
There are a few ways to tell if its an STi, the biggest being under the bonnet, red engine gives it away and STi decals on everything too!
Would suggest that if your buying one that you check out www.sidc.co.uk and look under FAQ, these cars will not be touched by UK subaru dealers but there are enough speciallists about for servicing etc and ensure you get your insurance quote first before you buy, it may end up more expensive if you dont (also normally 50% more expensive than a uk car).
Happy hunting and make sure that the last owner only put SUL or Optimax in the car, running 95 ron fuel will kill the engine, literally and engines aint cheap (also make sure they warm the car up, run the car down and let the turbo idle for a while, ie 2 mins, before turning the engine off)

Some STi's came with 300 PS/BHP such as the S201 and the Version VI type R's.
Try the sidc FAQ
http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm
for more info about power outputs of Imprezas and other usefull information.

Also another site worth looking at is the IWOC one
http://www.iwoc.co.uk/contents.html

There is a quite good book called
You and Your Subaru Impreza Turbo
by Chris Rees which goes into some depth on the different specs of Imprezas.
