Default Importing a car from Europe that was previously registered in UK

I am in the hunt for a Forester STi (yes it's an old love and had 2 in the past and is a car that had previously ticked all boxes) and a friend is selling his in Germany.
His car was previously registered in UK and he exported it to Germany before the Brexit.
He still has the V5 although the car now has German plates obviously.
If I were to buy this, do you know if I'd have to pay taxes/duties to register it in UK?
Many thanks!

If it's the same as Eire then no just register back here again as the duty has already been paid.

Cars regularly travel back and forth over the border here and plates are changed North/South. Once the duty on the car has been paid it doesn't matter, here anyway.
It goes on the vin number not the plate.
