Given all of those in denial about the new shape Subaru it is actually more popular than the old model.

In the first three months of this year, Subaru shifted 1291 of the new age car, with a three per cent shift to the 5-door wagon (PTMW is having an effect! )

Year on year this is slightly higher sales than Q1 2000 when Scoobs were still very popular!

Why have my local dealer got a Showroom full of them then? Waiting lists seem to be a thing of the past.

Just out of interest are these Subaru (UK) figures or the total registered including EU Imports?

Cheers,

Ian E.

P.S. must admit the new shape is growing on me

Sure, they're selling more of the new shape.

That doesn't mean it's preferred.

Also, wasnt the supply still limited early 2000?

(Import quotas, and more people wanting than could be supplied)

And its ugly and slow.

Where's the bloody recaro's???????

and Evo Mag rate the Clio 172 higher up. Its a Renault for Goodness sake.

I was honestly going to replace my STI with a new Impreza when it arrived as it was surely going to be a Evo 6 beating monster.

How wrong was I. Instead, I'm buying a TVR or Porsche.

Sorry Subaru, but you have lost the plot. Even Richard Burns is struggling against a Ford Focus, a Pug 206 and the ageing Evo 6.

Come on, new lights and a even uglier spoiler won't fix it.

We need,
New front
New rear
Proper seats (not ones half inched from a 87 Corolla)
Lots more grunt to make up for the almost germanic weight gain.
But more importantly, we need the passion back. If I want a car that is like a VW Bora, I'll buy...a VW Bora. But I don't.

Harsh but fair I think!!

Now where's that TVR dealer???

Eh?! I think it does! Lots of people were loyal to the Nissan Sunny, but they couldn't give Almeras away, yet the WRX is outselling the model it replaces, so what does that tell you? The new WRX has opened up a new market for Subaru, not just people who want a basically tinny car with a sh1te interior that happens to go like hell and handle OK.

People who wouldn't touch the original for those reasons will buy the new one because it is more refined.

The clientele may have changed, but it's popularity is in no doubt!

Geezer.

More are being made ?

Subaru could have sold stacks more of the old shape if they'd made more of them.

I remember the 9+ month wait for them back in 98/99

I think the point has been slightly missed by comparing sales in 2000 with sales in 2001, people are always reluctant to buy cars at the end of the life. The old model's popularity cannot be directly compared because most of the time it was on sale it was subject to quotas.

More telling perhaps is the number of new STi's be bought compared to a couple of years ago (ie no quotas for grey imports, despite old SVA limits). One dealer who sold many STI 5's etc has yet to sell one STI 7 (in stock) but has shifted 3 EVO 7's in the the same time.

Good point about the EU imports - assume these are not included, so actual amount is even more ! Incredible really - personally I dont like the shape, but Subaru have done a great job of making it more appealing to the masses, as opposed to us fanatics. This also goes for the US market where I gather they are selling very quickly.

If you read the article thats not the figures for the uk - think it was for the USA (who have no taste either way)

Never seen an Impreza with Recaro seats, not that I'm an expert or anything.

My WRX came with height adjustable versions of the same seat fitted to my 98, better material as well.

Seats with airbags arrived in the very early models.

I must say that 'bugzilla' is growing on me, the wagon espeically.

Would I get one? well, if I had the cash, yes, but it'd have to be a jap import, as the only move up I could make would be to an STi Bugzilla Wagon™ which would be nice.

PS - am I the only one to kinda like the UK300's spoiler? maybe I'm ill?

I think you hit the mark there trigger (oops ).

Thw new age scooby appeals a lot more to the masses, because it's more civilised (looks and behaviourwise). For the "fanatics", especially for the ones that have had Impreza's before, it's less apealing, exactly because of the same reasons that they are more apealing to the general public.

I am most impressed with my new shape and I get some positive comments on it.In my opinion its better than my old shape in most departments. Its a progression thing, the past is just that. I have fond memories of the old but now I'm having fun with the new. Bit like old girlfriends.

That is true - but in the homeland the STi has a massive waiting list - primarily because they can't make the gearboxes fast enough!

Saw a WRX wagon ina v. nice blue on the way to the rugby in Reading on Sunday. I really wanted it - much nicer than my MY99 DBM wagon IMHO.

I got my gx last week in white.

I love it the interior is miles ahead of my old car MY00.

I had a month wait for delivery for my car well worth the wait

Wink

Hearing people talk about the clientele for the new Impreza definitely rings true considering the last 5 imprezas I have seen were all MY01s and all were being driven by suits who would have looked more at home in a Vectra, BMW 3 etc. i.e. the Rep brigade. I don't know how many pre MY01s were driven by Reps!

That's right, 'cos it must be impossible to enjoy driving if you have to wear a suit! I mean once you put a tie on all ability to discern motoring quality goes out the window

Nice One Tiggs...

Agree totally with Ducati man

Disagree totally with CB

The two positive comments come from MY01 owners who have lived with the car....nuff said really. Who thinks the old model is attractive anyway? I certainly didn't buy my old shape because of the looks. Do Subaru make a good looking car at all...nope!! So why so many comments about the looks of the new car?

Go on admit it. It's a way of getting your post count up!

Although I've not owned an old shape Scoob, I think the MY01 is the better car. It's only marginally slower (Autocar figures) and marginally uglier (my opinion, niether shape is pretty) but the interior is from the 90's rather than the 70's and the ride and handling are on a different level, again according to Autocar and certain others on this list.

I had the choice of either and have chosen a MY01 and I'm definetly an enthusiast!!

So perhaps, on balance we should conclude that the New Age Impreza is popular with those that own it....and its not a secret anymore!!

Well my MY95 has Recaros - Prodrive Interior of its day. The support is absolutely great
