Default Sports Cat

Common question I guess? I'd like to be emissions legal so are there mid section sports cats available?

A mid section catalyzer wouldn't be hot enough to work efficiently. That's why they are close to the bell mouth.

delete the mid section , plus a lot of the times they seem to be silencers and not a cat again depending on your car , by getting rid of the mid section better flow plus a bit more burble , hayward and scott do them , again depending on what you are driving normally 2 different lengths

Not sure if you have a 99PPP or not (?) But I have a Cobra sports cat downpipe on mine for the last year. Very happy with it - good quality and tapered fit to my deresonated centre section. Also provides the occasional pop and crackle on the over run. Bought mine mostly because the original downpipe (20 years old) was starting to crumble at the join.

i had one fsti with a sports cat and one fsti with a standard cat , on the road performance wise there was nothing in it , if you want a bit more turbo noise plus a few more bhp’s then go for it , mpg etc pretty much the same too , latest fsti has equal length headers and a sports cat , again a very minimal difference when it comes to on the road performance plus no burble sounds more like a quick golf lol , i never fitted the sports cat or headers to any fsti it was put on by previous owners , personally i think they are over rated as have little difference in the road effect , a good map plus a fuel pump and cat back work well on a scooby , funny thing was i had a jdm sti wagon 2 litre with about 340bhp , the 300 bhp 2.5 fsti would leave the wagon for dead at a set of lights and still never got close after the set of lights , tuning wise pick your power you want and find the smallest turbo that will do it so you get the least turbo lag , or just tune what you have without a lot of mods other than as above exhaust for burble and fuel pump , i still get up to 35 mpg so it keeps it practicable for a daily commute , too many mods kills that as your mpg plus reliability suffer

All I have is straight through to a Hayward and Scott back box, so my aim is to put a cat in somewhere along the line so I don't have to keep messing about with it at mot time!

The only UK choices for jdm sports cats are Hayward and Scott or Milltek, or Custom, like Infinity exhausts, Bristol. No custom place will recommend a 100 cell cat because of the uncertainty of passing emissions.
They are alot for a small gain; I'm still on an oem jdm cat at 359 hp.

Have a Japspeed exhaust manifold, Ninja 3" sports cat 100cell down pipe, Power flow 3" catback exhaust. Sounds very nice has a deep burble.

I've tried so many exhausts from Prodrive to Jap style systems, to JDM imported systems, I've lost count. And this system has added plenty of power, car is standard apart from this, changes the way the turbo kicks in now, and revs so much freeer.

Had my mot few months ago. It always struggles to get through as needs to be red hot. Although mot guy pointed out that my gasket was leaking and any leak would effect the test. So will sort that out and see if improves.

I think both blob and hatch will be the same in that oem is a 2.5" diameter pipe; Martyn advised me to go 3", and I'll go sports cat then, or decat, but tbh, there's not much more to be had there, maybe 5hp and some more spool hopefully.

Iv had sports cats on other cars and they were still a pain at mot time , the only thing I'm worried about really is braking studs on the down pipe while keep changing them over

That's great to hear. Is your middle section standard too and who has mapped yours?

We're edging away from the OP's original question here, sorry; .....but HKS mid section and sti back box. Still sitting on the fence about fitting the titanium 3" Invidia I've got; I'm frightened about the noise. May sell it. Martyn J mapped it, it was actually 357.6 bhp, got that wrong.

How you mean the only UK choices for JDM cats?

I noticed a lot less turbo lag with the sports cat.

I struggled to pass the MOT (the car needed to be taken for a spirited drive before to get the cat hot) in my previous FSTi with a Miltek sports cat fitted in the middle section.
I've replaced the downpipe with a PPP one from a 2.0 STi and it was fine afterwards.

Thats because the Prodrive downpipe is 200 cell. And a cat in the centre pipe is to far away from the engine to get decent temp.

Ok, here's another question then, has anyone here ever been stopped by the police and been done for not having a legal exhaust?

the dvla can do emissions checks on the side of the road but very rare , they as in police could do you for a loud exhaust but have no way of checking emissions so can’t and won’t do you for a decat if you were asking that , rumour of new listening devices for loud exhausts and you can get a ticket if too loud

My old classic had a straight through with nur spec and was crazy loud to the point I hated it.
I was stopped by a copper who just said bit loud isn't it.
I was about 20 and he didn't seem to be a dick.
More of a ' I can see you're all legal just be sensibme' kind of guy

I have also been at a car meet where the police blocked the exit and literally went and checked every car for cats etc. Then gave out 7 day producers

7 day producers that’s a long time ago , the ace cafe in london is getting issues , very simply getting ruined by the silly few , they are talking on closing it because of people’s behaviour going too far , getting back to cat question that’s why i would sports cat if i was changing it , rather than de cat , so dvla and plod won’t give you an issue plus no mot issues

There was a lad near my that back in the day had a Nova with crazy loud exhaust. He said police had banned him going through town after 10. I find the listening devices so odd. After all this time, and now electric cars are coming why bother lol

Loud cars never bother me. Dirty diesels do.

I don’t like dirty diesel cars especially in work
