Default What is wrong wih this Subaru?

2007 Subaru Forester 2.5 XS

I think it is the starter? It sounds like it is grinding against metal. What do you think?

Video of the car:

Thanks

Thanks I will pull it out and take a look at it. You are the best. I needed another opinion.

There's a bearing on the nose of the starter motor. This failed on my classic. It's easy to replace and is a standard needle roller bearing easily available on the net.
Be careful replacing the starter. The bolts are a fine thread into aluminium and are easily stripped. A torque wrench is a good friend when working on a Subaru. ISTR they are different lengths.
Don't forget to disconnect the battery before working on the starter. Clearance is tight and a short makes a big mess.

I created a repair video showing how to replace the starter.

The starter worked great. If it fails again I will continue to diagnose and update.
