Default Replacement rubber case for key fob.

Want to replace the rubber casing around my key fob but I can't find where to get one anywhere. I've tried key cutter (will only cut a new key) Ebay, Amazon etc.

Anyone know where to get them?

I've looked extensively on eBay but what's theres is either a total replacement or the plastic shell with blank key that wouldn't fit mine anyway.

It's literally just the outside rubber case in after as the keys work perfectly.

Those are complete replacement fobs which I really can't be bothered with programming to be honest when both fobs I have work just fine.

I'm going to keep looking they must be available those rubber outer covers.

Ah, I see, just the rubber outer 'shell' to house your original PCB/buttons - I getcha.

Thing is, isn't the programming relatively 'straightforward', regardless - i.e. just a few turns of the key in the ignition etc...?

That's it. It's just a rubber outer. Pointless replacing a whole key just for that.

Didn't realise the old keys had a removable "outer skin" so to speak.
It's not available from Subaru and most keys on ebay look in a similar condition

As it's just a rubber case why not clean the old one up and re laquer it ??

Because that would of been far too easy to of thought of that in the first place

I think I will do just that. Good idea thanks don.

I've got some lacquer left over from doing my headlights, would that work on rubber or would I need another type for rubber?

You could buy the fresh fob from the bay and just swap the cover over ?

Depends what it is. You may have to experiment with different types or maybe even try Plastidip clear

Well in taking the rubber outer shell off revealed it had fallen to pieces anyway, someone had glued the back bit on which was in multiple pieces, so I'll deff have to replace the rubber or the whole fob.

I think long term a new fob will be less hassle.

Edit: I didn't realise how easy the electronics came out of the fobs. Easy. Get new fob and transfer the electronics over and get the key cut on it. Found them for £5.99 incl del so a nice cheap improvement.

By far the easiest route.

Got the new blank through £5.99 delivered.

Went to timpsons to get the blank cut and they wouldn't do it, but i COULD get one from them for £60 for a normal key or £130 for a new remote one.

I just laughed and walked out.

It's interesting in just how much mark up there is on keys though. The person I got the blank off on eBay had sold hundreds at £5.99 delivered, so it shows how much you can actually get a blank for then sell on.

I have exactly the same problem with mine, keys fine just the casing. I’ve been given an old Subaru casing with the electrics board still in it. When you say it’s easy to switch over, how do I do this ?, as I don’t wanna go to Subaru and fork out for a whole new key fob when the old key works fine.

cheers

This turned into an absolute nightmare in the end and I gave up. The shell I bought off eBay didn't quite fit the electronics in it properly, they went in, but weren't the exact snug fit the original. Not a big deal as the board and transponder aren't going anywhere once the case is screwed back together.

However, nobody, and I mean NOBODY! Would cut it to match the original at all, not even key cutters at a boot sale.

I tried a few different timpsons in the end if I passed one. One guy in timpsons tried to tell me it's because they need a special shell to match the original, oh what you mean like this one in my pocket I paid £5.99 for? Called him out for bull****ting infront of other customers which he was embarrassed for being caught out on.

So in the end I'm still rocking the same key.

ive been given an original Subaru casing so I’m hoping that I will be able to swap the electric board out with no problem, otherwise I’ll be in the same position as you.

what did you use to take the board out mate ? And is there anything else that needs to be done to switch over ?.

dont wanna buggar it up by using the wrong tools.

Only thing you need to worry about is a small metal plate that push fits over a small plastic pole. The pole is part of the case mold so once it snaps it's good bye. You just need to tease the metal plate clamp off carefully then the board & transponder literally fall out.

You'll only need a small Phillips & flat head to do it.

If I can take a pic I will do to show you.

thats the problem with my current key, the metal plate has gone missing causing the key to move about in the casing thus meaning the casing is moving about.

ill take a look tonight then if it’s easy as that. Wasn’t sure whether the board would of been soldered down.

Just sandwich something in the case to pack it out if that's the case. Bit of rubber, plastic would do just to keep it all snug. That's all the plate and pin do.

Not sure if the WRX Hatch/STi Hatch that uses a key for ignition(rather than the keyless access push button start models) will also have a transponder in the key as well.
The early key operated (keyless entry) MY08> models have the S34 sigma alarm, which like the earlier M30 version eventually had the separate radio key fob circuitry integrated into the pcb of the single button ignition key.
