Somewhat torn between a flippant "Google is your friend" response versus happiness that there's still some activity on this forum.
My £0.02 is that these are now 17-23 year-old cars and differences between individual examples will outweigh any version differences, which were subtle even when they were new.
Biggest differences are the dash boards and cams, beyond that original V3 and facelift if we're talking STI's.
Your biggest problem is going to be finding a nice one... as with all classics... you want one that's spent a large chunk of time in a garage or fresh import, anything else and rust is going to be an issue.
Pretty much what Ditchmyster said, Rust will be the biggest issue with these cars now, and anything decent condition you will be paying a large premium for it, Personally I prefer the Version 5/6 as it was last of the classic shape and come with the crystal headlights, better looking dash/steering wheel, front bumper.
Maybe depends why you're looking to purchase one of these - the V1 obviously lacked some of the later refinements but if original and good condition it's probably a good enthusiasts car as a classic investment. I seem to think the V3 was the first version wagon to come with 280 bhp and the later V3 cars got the 4 pot calipers and larger discs. There a nice white V6 on eBay or gumtree just now, maybe a bit pricey for what you were planning - £6995 - but I seem to think it's a recent import and the ad looks like the car is excellent condition.

Mine was imported 9 years ago & I have no evidence of mine ever been mapped etc.I run it on v power or momentum & never had any problems.I am going get a mapped esl installed in the new year around feb/march 2018 but it will be mainly in the pursuit of more power.
I loved my MY99 classic wagon. It had a mild map tweak to 250bhp and drove beautifully. I kept it for nearly 14 years.
The STi should be even nicer, so I'd just go for it. The later the better, I'd say.
I think re-map would be on the cards for sure, not least to make sure it runs well on UK fuel.
Doesn't matter what ecu it has these days as the price will be about the same, Ecutec (mappable) will cost you ish £500 because of the licence fee and ESL (piggy back/daughter board) will cost about the same board + mapping, there is Open source but I'd only use that if I were mapping it myself.

I've got a Version 1 STI Wagon, JDM, imported in 2006 and garaged. For Sale.
My friend has got a Version 3 STI Wagon, JDM Import. We compare them back to back a lot, which is really good. I find the EJ20G (V1 engine) has better low down torque where as EJ20K (V2 engine) has much better top end power delivery but not as much low down torque.
Other than that, very similar!
