Default ADVICE ON QUICK RELEASE FOR STEERING WHEEL

Hi All,

Looking at getting a quick release for a Sparco steering wheel on a classic, anybody got one? had one? used one? I would like to know if you have had success with it? and if your fingers could still reach the stalks? what make did you have? I am thinking boss plus quick release bolt on, will place steering wheel a fair bit closer to driver and further from stalks, as it's a fair bit of money to spend as will be buying steering wheel at the same time, so I don't wont to waste money, if I can't reach the stalks. I am looking at the lifeline one, but am open to suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Hello mate if your going to get a QRB make sure that its a quality one from the likes of NRG or an Original Sparco or WorksBell,as those ebay jobbies are complete ****e and Dangerous.Depending on what style steering wheel that you go for deep dish or flat, the dish ones will bring your hands away from the stalks a tad but can be compensated with a slim boss which I have on my car.

I have had mine fitted for years now and drives just like the standard wheel but in a more comfortable position for me for fast driving, better feedback.SJ.

Hi Mate,

Defo not going for a cheap one, probably lifeline or maybe motacorsa, where did you get your boss from? it looks thinner than the one I have been looking at on demon tweeks and am going for a flat wheel, the QRB seem to be about 50/53mm, so really need a thin boss, thanks for your help.

Default Lifeline Quick release

I've recently fitted a lifeline boss kit to mine and it really brings the steering wheel forward by a lot! Im thinking of selling it, feel really annoyed as it cost about £190 when i bought it few years ago and i've been using it only for last 2 weeks. really nice piece of kit but just a shame its going to have to come off!

if your tall with long arms lol happy to sell it..

also have a momo 280mm steering wheel thats way too small and needs to go!

Hi Shax,

Yes You are correct the lifeline one is quite large, 90mm I believe, The NRG is smaller, about 62mm I think, The only one I can find smaller than that is the works bell one but only by 1mm, coming in at 61mm, the smallest boss I can find is 30mm, so I'm probably going down this route, had I not found this I would have probably jumped at buying yours, but I'd prefer to keep it as short as I can, The wheel is quite small at 280mm, but I may be interested, what model number is it?

I have HKB boss kit and ebay quick release and I'm really happy with it. I can still reach stalks without much issue, just got used to it that it is much further. My steering wheel is 320mm and I think it is the best size to get

Hi Hoodedlime,

I have just found out about the HKB boss, and it has the resistor for the air bag cancelation, and the indicator cancelation, I believe the NRG does not have either of these benefits, unless someone wants to correct me?
but I'm concerned at the length of the HKB boss, as the short NRG one is only 30mm in length.
Do you or anyone know the Length of the HKB boss?

Cheers PJ

I also have the HKB (to retain horn and indicators). Plus the NRG GEN 2.5 quick release and its optional lock cover. Brilliant triumvirate.

I also run a stupidly small wheel - the Momo MOD.26..........at 260mm!

Hi joz8968,

260mm whoa bonkers, can you reach stalks ok?
Does anyone know if I'm correct in thinking than neither the short works bell and short NRG boss, do not have self cancelling for the indicators?

Yes, both those bosses have self-canceling (I mentioned it in my post). Plus, they retain the horn-push.

Yeah, stalks reach is perfectly fine.

Hi Joz8968,
I'm surprised about that, as I was sure neither the NRG short boss or works bell had self cancelling, and I thought I read somewhere that's why you preferred the HKB?

Sorry, my bad - I misread your post. I was indeed talking about the HKB (and at least the normal length Works Bell) bosses.

Not sure on both the NRG bosses (as I had a Momo one on prior to discovering the HKB).

NOTE:
If you get the HKB, you'll need to buy a second-hand OEM clockspring again (unless you have your original, still).

It bolts into the back of the hollow boss (so as to retain the self-canceling, obviously).

Hi Joz8968,

Ok thanks for that, I'm still looking at shorter boss's at the moment before I buy, as trying to find the shortest I can with self cancelling, do you know if the standard length works bell is shorter than the HKB one? trying to find measurement's for boss's is a nightmare.

I have not taken it apart yet, so I have not seen the OEM clock spring, and do not know what it looks like or the length of it? would I be correct in thinking that it is quite long and will not fit into the shorter boss's?
anyone?

thanks Peeps.

I doubt there'll be much difference between the HKB and normal WB. Certainly nothing to worry about, reach-wise.

I'm 5' 9.5" lol with 'proportional arms' lol, and the arm is slightly bent at the elbow (with the wrist on top of the steering wheel - as per the recommendation). I do use a totally flat, non-dished wheel, though.

I can measure the HKB tomorrow, and post up. (Despite not being marketed as 'a short boss', it's not that long).

The clock spring totally fills up the recess in the HKB, so I'm 99% certain no short bosses are designed to re-use it(?)

Ok Thanks, sounds like that's the answer then, just need to find supplier now then, where did you get yours?
