Has anyone ever don't this on there driveway (guessing a few have), is it easy and straightforward enough or is it a right 'mare, I expect it will take a good few hours or maybe even a day giving its not on a ramp?.

 

I think you will find most would remove engine(me included) if not using a ramp.
You can take the engine out in under 2hrs(a lot less when you've done it a few times)

Not sure how long it would take the box out method but personally I would rather not be struggling on my back under the car.

 

Has been done by a fellow member on here with a 6speed box on a classic if you feel your competent enough to do it then it's easy ramp or no ramp it's all on how confident and competent you are
Don't forget to use them axle stands safety first

 

Tim Farmer did my sixspeed on our gravel driveway by dropping the gearbox but then there isn't much that would phase him lol. He did it in under 4 hours but his son was there to help and used a couple of good trolly jacks. On a good surface and a very much lighter 5 speed it might not be too bad. But as above I just wouldn't fancy squirming around under the car.

I'm fairly competent I think, ive removed engines, & gearboxes before (never in a 4 wheel drive car though) but tbh I didn't give a monkeys if I broke something coz they were usually ****ters lol, don't fancy breaking something on a decent motor 😢

 

Would be interesting to find out how long it would take to remove the box and fit the clutch with engine in situ.
My 50p bet on the race would be engine out.
Plus I would be drinking a nice cold beer whilst casually working in the engine bay

 

You need that rocket fuel to take the edge off bro

 

Enigine out is deffinately the easiest option. Give yourself a day to allow for tea breaks

P.S. Don't for get to remove the clutch fork pivot pin!

Good advice,bloody pin! Took me almost as long to get that bugger back in than it did to refit the engine the 1st time around

 

Change the clutch, pretty sure i wouldn't get any change out of 300

I have access to a sikk workshop bro back alley days are long gone and I'd doubt my back could take that cold floor in the winter

 

So I've phoned 3 garages, 1 won't do it, 1 quoted 500 the other a Jap car garage said 987.

So who's gonna do it? I've got all the coffee and booze u could need.

most garages have little experience with scoobys so factor in a few more hours or don't want to know.

I do have ramps and will take the box out the only problem I fore see is the car runs a standard cat and may need removing to get the box out and I hope the studs all play ball!!

 

After you've removed them rusty bolts on the heat cover

 

farmer autocare wont touch it

kwikfit 500 them supplying the clutch

&

fife mitsubishi 987 them supplying the clutch

i know thats not many but it was just to get a rough idea

 

Try HQ garage in Dalgety Bay mate 01383 827900. That will at least give you an idea of the price for a garage that can actually do the job right. I wouldn't go near kwikfit.

 

Had mine done a week ago, cost me £468 for an Excedy and oil fitted. Now I have clutch judder in 1st/2nd and a whining noise when off the throttle rolling along... Sigh.

 

Who did the work and have you spoke to them about putting it right?
Make sure you check the oil levels if you haven't already.
There are a lot of counterfeit exedy clutches about! Is the garage a registered supplier of exedy?

 

The normal guy that I use who is a Subaru specialist. Went to go back this week but they're shut, I'll have to go back next week and get him to check it. I'm not sure if he's a registered supplier or not, I just assumed it would be ok because he's done all my other work with no problems.

 

Cool,if he's a good guy then I'm sure the problems will be sorted

I would still check the oil before driving the car tho.

 

I took my time to do mine last year, all done by myself apart from at the end you need an extra pair of hand to push the engine while I connected the box to engine, i also changed all the seals and bushes at the same time, what i have learnt from doing this job was a transmission jack is a must.
