My MY00 (40k miles) has started to make a sort of 'cammy' sound on startup and for the first few seconds when it's cold. It's not a knocking, ticking or tapping noise -- more like a diesel sort of noise (but not the same sort of volumes). I've checked the oil level and it looks OK (though it's hard to tell as the layout of the tube smears the oil all the way up the dipstick). The only thing that occurs to me is that I changed dealers for servicing while the old place used to use Esso Ultron the new place use BP Visco 3000 (whatever that may be).

Any ideas/remedies? I would do a search but I don't think anyone else uses the word 'cammy'.

Hey-ho.. you too eh? I think it's the same as most of us MY99 and MY00 (and some others?) owners are getting when cold, for the first 5 minutes. Current theory is it's piston slap on #3 cylinder as that's a slightly (60 micron) different size to the others; in this case it's a trip to the garage to get the new piston fitted, hopefully under warranty. Mine's booked in for next Thursday to get this checked out - will let you know how I get on.

Cheers
Richard

I had similar sound on my 94 Sti and just changed to a thinner oil(Mobil 1) and a new Filter, never happened again even when cold.

It's really only for the first 30 seconds or so, and only when you prod the throttle (revs rise to about 1500 and it sounds a bit like my 150,000 mile Saab).

Cool

Mine does the same when cold and I believe it is because it is due an oil change.
The turbo cooks the oil and it doesn't lubricate as well.
If you turn the key on and off quickley so it just turns the engine over without starting, do this a couple of times and then start and the noise shouldn't be there.

Time for an oil change.....

My previous Toyota which had a Turbo did the same thing.

The cams just haven't got enough oil on them as it has all run to the bottom and not left any coating on the cams and therefore give the 'cammy' noise until the oil is pump up to them...

Does the oil thicknen up with age then? Mine is fine for the first 4 to 6 weeks, then it starts again. This is the only reason I can see for the poor flow.

mine does exactly the same thing MY 99 on a whopping 15000 miles (not).

Except it comes back when the car is idling.

An oil change did the trick temporaily about 4 mths ago.

It makes a right din when I'm trafic but if I rev it just slightly above idle it quietens down.

It's really pi55ing me off having a 1 year old car that sounds worse than my 10 year old 16v Golf

Chances of getting sorted under warranty for a Euro import= nil I reckon.

Carl,

Yours certainly sounds like piston slap (again ). Take it to your dealer and get it fixed under warranty, just like I did.

IMO Simon & Richard have got it right.

Take it along to your favourite dealer (or two) and get their opinion. Should be easy to confirm. they've had enough experience

Wink

carl "it must be of merachantable quality and fit for purpose"Not sure what the rights are under EU law, but must be similar. take it to your dealer who does the service and see what he says.if he won't do it contact the dealer in EU you bought it from and see if he'll cover it done by uk dealer. Then If its a big job talk to subaru uk they have to take on board thire obligations on behalf of Fuji. If they refuse then keep upping the anti
if they refuse write to the chairman, then write again copy top gear, witch and watchdog
Then if all else fails get engineers report write to subaru saying you are getting it fixed and will invoice them for the cost.If they don't agree take them to small claims court.(you may have to take some legl advice before this last step)
companies especially chairman hate publicity so keep the pressure on him
pain i know but it'll get it fixed eventually.
Anyway enough of my rantings don't give up.

To clarify -- it came with a year's warranty which has now expired. Mind you, I think you may have something with the 'merchantable quality' -- it should last longer than 18 months and 40,000 miles...

whoa there navigator could you back off the mike a bit dealers should look at an eu import with out a problem we do but i think that you only get 12 months warranty coz im stand the other 2 to give uk spec 3 yrs.
but if it is out of warranty they might do it as a goodwill gesture.
