Question 2.5 hatch owners..

... How we getting on with these cars, or more specifically engines now?

Have the HG replacements and remaps sorted them out, or are there cases of multiple failures?

I can only see my next car being a hatch Sti in the future, just tried other cars and I can't get away from the Impreza appeal. I'd always thought I'd buy a hatch and just build a 2.0 for it but got me thinking I'd ask how the fixes were holding up. After having a 2.5 in a type r years ago, there's no denying the grunt of the 2.5 is nice.

Also, are there any bodywork (rust) issues with these cars?

Mine had a new engine 13k ago..Thought I had issues the other day..but 150 compression on all cylinders says otherwise!.. For me,the pro's of the car? Far outweigh the engine problems..it's just an awesome car to drive! Buy one,and just account for the cost of a rebuild in the future.

Mine is approaching 100k but I bought it with a fresh forged engine about 25k miles ago. No issues at all (other than the paintwork is a bit thin and marks easily) very reliable and practical car. Just buy a forged one or keep some money aside to forge it if it does let go.

Good to hear about the good ones instead of all the failed ones out there.

Yeah but it's 50/50 standard/rebuilt engines on this thread , so cant really judge.
I should maybe just not worry.

Getting the weak points sorted is cheaper pre failure than is it after. So it's a case of do you take a chance on it failing or nor.

Mines on around 50k with a forged engine running just over 500bhp ,, I found the 330 seats a bit tight (I'm not a large chap) and the sides bolsters seemed to be wearing very quickly (prob how I get in and out the car) so I replaced the interior in mine but other than that I'm very impressed with it all round and still prefer it over all the other Scoobs iv owned

Thanks guys, sounds like the fixes are holding up at least.

I'd like a jdm 2.0 really but they're a lot more money.

Mines on 38K. STI with Prodrive pack. Runs/pulls well - compression 150, 145, 142 & 135 (no. 4) but uses very little oil and coolant level fine so I guess ok for now. Great car to drive and love the look of these. Had classic, PI, 2002 STI ppp and WRX wagon in the past and this is my favourite. Had lowering springs fitted some months back and car has started to develop a knocking /popping type noise from when driving slowly (can't hear it when on the move) so any ideas what this can be please? The noise is getting more noticeable now but like I say, only at very low speeds. Would also like a bit more noise from the exhaust but don't want to upset the map!

10% across them is borderline issue though

Which car you looking at? Link?

Careful it's not a euro import being passed off as a 330s

I forged mine recently and had no problems with. It running awesome. I did put 11k in to the engine and other bits. I get a bit carried away. Not running big power but all set up for it. Just need a bigger turbo.

P.s Its up for sale as soon as i get back from work.

got a 2008 sti. Bought from new. 54k on the clock. Sports CAT, prodrive back box and K&N filter. Safe map by Bob Rawle in 2010. Usually put Supermarket super unleaded in it. No issues to date. Only down side is the rip off road tax of £485 a year. Great all round car. Would buy another if they still did the Hatches

So, 4 years on from starting this thread and I’m seriously considering selling my V6 sti saloon (and WRX wagon & clio 172) and buying a hatchback sti.

How’s the ownership experience these days chaps?

Must admit the tax thing is a bit of a turn off but I pay out on 3 cars and a van so consolidating would save me money anyway!

It’s really tough as I look at the V6 STIs for sale and there’s a lot of rubbish with no history out there so a regretful sale would see a struggle to replace it, I know! I’ve had the V6 7 years this year but it sits in the garage mostly and I’m kind of thinking life’s too short to have it sat there. It’s on 79k & don’t really want to get rid of the other two and just daily it as I do a lot of shooting and fishing and my WRX wagon is awesome for that and the saloon is just not practical for my lifestyle, it’s only good for a fun car.

Thinking behind the hatch sti is the practical side as well as being an sti still, and no rusting issues (still I hope?) Get rid of the gawd awful clear rear lights (assuming there’s a good cure?)

I did have a bugeye sti wagon years ago and that was great but even at that time (8 or so years) the rear arches were starting to rust.

Hatches are a great daily, and Jdm's are only £270 tax a year.

Buy one, you wont regret it.

More practical, better interior, less of them on the road.

Oh and yes mine did suffer HG failure after it was rebuilt by a numpty, however after a proper rebuild she runs beautifully, no regrets

My 08 STI is great fun. They need HG and pistons replacing. Big grin factor and 5 door practicality. They will also take a tow bar. All parts are available if you want to start modifying.
