do like both but................ are the 2.5 hawks a pain? they go bang alot?

2.5's break pistons, miley 2.0's break crankshaft bearings. take your chances with both. I prefer the 2.0 however, simply because I am bias!
UK car avoid hawk at all costs much higher tax band and the engine is rubbish.
If its a JDM car they are all pretty good depends what model you want.
Wrx,sti or spec c.
The jdm models command a premium price but are sought after so are much easier to sell on.

2.5s in WRX Hawks seem ok at the slightly lower power levels.
Be aware that any UK car REGISTERED 23/03/06 or after will be in the higher tax bands (currently £490 pa WRX £505 pa STi) Some early hawks come before this date and are under the capped band (£290 pa)

I love my Hawk STI, I wouldn't change it, I've never owned or driven anything other than a hawk so I am limited, my engine has never gone bang and while its a low mileage relatively well cared and serviced for car, ive put 10k on this year no problems. It is in the £500 tax band but you should always buy on spec condition and service history, tax comes round once a year, the RIGHT STI might not. (plus pay monthly) the engine is fantastic, so much torque throughout the rev range, lightning throttle response. Best advice is to have it mapped (seems less risk of running lean and causing the pistons to melt) and to have some cash hanging about to forge it if and when it does need it, but, in my experience at least its a fantastic car!
Difference. The way I personally see it is the bug is ugly (I had one, great car other than the look of it) hawk is dear road tax and also has the engine problems. So for me it has to be the good looking blob with the proper engine and lower tax band.
In fact in my opinion the wide track sti blob is the best impreza subaru produced, along with WR1 and RB320 (it's a hawk I know)
I love my hawk sti but as others have said you've got to be prepared for the dreaded piston or head gasket failure, mines on it's second headgasket and is soon to be on it's third, gonna get it forged this time round though to future proof it, one bonus with mine is it's a 2005 so it's cheaper tax.

I've owned a JDM blob and a UK hawk STi (as well as a P1 but that's irrelevant here)
I much prefer my hawk. The JDM was a good car and I wasn't having to keep one eye on the temperature dial at all times, but I just prefer the hawk as an all-rounder. Most of the extras you get on the JDM models you don't even notice, such as the rear wiper and quicker steering rack to name a few (speaking for me personally. I'm sure other folk will swear by them).
The low-down torque of the 2.5 is great, as is the over-taking ability on motorways. It's a shame about the HG issues really. If Subaru had of sorted out the problems with the 2.5, it would have been an epic car. However, a forged 2.5...... :-)
