Default to decat or to not decat

Hi, yet again im in need of help. Took my 1998 impreza 2.0 awd turbo for M.O.T. Expecting to fail but wanted to know what needed doing. Suprised that most of the jobs I done were ok, failed on exhaust. Got Scooby on ramp to have a look and there is more holes than exhaust, back box is good, the rest is screwed including bottom lamda sensor, now wondering on decat and would it be worth it. Any help or advice welcome, by the way in disabled and not exactly flush with cash.

A decat will not help your "failed" mot status!

If you decat then your gonna need a remap which isn't cheap.
But will transform the car into what it really can be.
I'm not sure what price 1998 classics cost to remap but open source 2001 onwards starts at 300!
If you haven't got the money then get a new original exhaust and have done with it.
Good luck.

1998 can't be remapped as standard, requires ESL or similar. Saying that, my car has no cat and ran really rich even before I fitted ESL and mapped it. I was getting AFR in the 10's with a full Blitz Nur Spec R system.

I've ran my Greenwagon for 15 years decatted and not remapped
No issues and sounds nice

Would cause the op some issues at mot time though so best he gets a standard system put on

An MY98 doesn't need a remap for a full decat. I ran one on a MY00 without any issue.

As mentioned it won't help your MoT but I just used to refit the centre section cat on my prior to the MoT and took it for a good blast before arriving at the MoT station so it was nice and hot. Always passed.

You should be able to pick up a reasonably priced stainless steel system second hand I'd have thought and as it's stainless it should be in good condition.

I had a full Hayward and Scott system on mine with the down pipe wrapped and sprayed to keep the heat in / away from the engine bay. Sounded lovely, not overly loud but loud enough on a spirited drive + a few pops and bangs on the over run

You mentioned a bottom lambda sensor, as far as I remember the MY98 should only have one and its in the down pipe just after the turbo.
