Default 400bhp capable turbos

Hi, 1st post on here.

I'm putting a power package together for my classic now that the brakes and suspension are sorted so i'm now looking for advice/options on which route to take turbo wise.

The current build in progress has the following spec
6 speed box
740cc injectors
HDI FMIC
V7 STI block mated to V5 STI heads, rcm gaskets
Brembos front/rear
Racelogic coilovers
Whiteline 22mm front/rear arb's with drop links
Alcatek ECU

I have done some reading up before posting and seen that a decent td05-20g will make it past 400, and i've also read about the SC range (blouch?). Im not fimiliar with the md321 and dont know what the T and V are on them, i've also seen GT30's but again havent found much on them.

Ideally looking for someone running over the 400 mark on a similar setup to give me their opinion and maybe point me to some 2nd hand, as my budget isnt as large as i'd originally hoped (£800 tops).

If you can get a hold of a TD05 20G billet that will do the job - SC & MD while cracking turbos are expensive new and usually command a good 2nd hand value from around the top end of your budget onwards to £1,000+

Should be able to pick up a decent TD05 20G for around the £500 mark - I am looking for one myself for my own Type R (I have a 2.1 stroker forged engine) and saving for the 6 speed box

Forgot to mention avoid ebay 20Gs - loads of fakes/copies

Part of my reason for asking is exactly what you say there mate.

Seen various decent 20g's (andy forrest etc) for £500 or less so i'm curious what the benefit of the others is over one half the cost?

I am not sure personally but I have had both turbos - MDX555-450 & TD05 - and I would buy both again. The good thing with a TD05 is that if it dies you haven't lost that much money! But my experience is they are very solid reliable units - the other MD turbos are the "Gucci" turbos LOL!!!

sack the racelogic coilovers for starters. for the rest of it seek advice from a tuner, right turbo for the build will make or break it as far as how good it is to drive

there ****, my dad had them, both rear shocks failed and leaked all there oil out in 12 months. Mate had a set and the locking ring split. UK distributor has gone out of business so warrenty is a waste of paper. My dad ended up with a set of tien super streets, much better ride for the road as well.

The Turbo Technics billet T36 is a bargain at just £900+ vat delivered and is a very capable unit.

This example is on a built 2 litre Classic running 1.6 bar on Tesco 99 fuel.

I've managed to get hold of a very cheap GT3071R (stock location) but suspect it needs a rebuild due to shaft play. Can anyone recommend somewhere to send it for a rebuild? I know of CR Turbos and Owen Developments but not had any dealings with them.

The T36 sounds nice, wonder what it would perform on E85? Is the T36 for the standard Subaru style downpipe, or is it like the S206B?

It'll require a new core as roller bearing ones aren't rebuildable.

I suspect getting on for 500hp and yes the T36 is a direct fit, no mods reqd.
The turbo outlet has the same slight kink as VF43 and 48 to clear the throttle body on the DBW cars but fits classics and Newage cars too.

It's difficult to say because unless you've fitted all 3 on the same car you haven't got accurate comparison data.
I can pass you this gem from a similar thread, check out the last post.

Tesco 99 but yes straight pump fuel.
Heads and cams are stock Hawkeye, it's a built engine with Perrin induction and intercooling, ASNU 750cc injectors, GT spec headers and a 3 inch system.
Nothing particularly fancy and easy to replicate.
Mapped on Ecutek racerom.

Just been quoted £700-800+ vat as an approximate rebuild cost.

This is a very interesting turbo, especially with the spool and capabilities up at the top.

A built 2 litre engine, STI 4 heads, GT spec headers, 3 inch exhaust, 740cc injectors, front mount, pump and an Alcatek ecu. Again nothing fancy really and easily repeatable.
