I think Ra is stripped out, no extras, eg manual window winders

Model year play's a part in the difference as does the flavour of RA, whether its WRX or STI....

Cheers, I've heard and read many different things about both and am a little confused about them as there are so many versions and variants, I was looking at a 95 impreza wrx (recent jap import) although I was told it was a type ra? Couldn't find a clear definite answer anywhere showing the difference between the two or differences between all the variants and versions of classic Scooby's

Think RA doesn't have ABS, i know it doesn't have electric windows and maybe electic mirrors, from what i've read its a lightened STI, basicly taken out the creature comforts and lightened the body, i looked at one few years back, but too hardcore for me, although i've seen a few with aircon so not completely stripped

Most if not all came with a/c. Ive never seen one that didnt have it fitted. IRC electric windows were an option (mine has them) but the jury is out on that one. Many differences between versions
Low ratio box & diff, roof vent and DCCD on STI RA models, WRX RA's have low ratio box without dccd, fifth injector, no ABS, alloy bonnet. limited sound deadening, manual but not remote mirrors and a load of other fly s*** details that all add up to a hardcore no nonsense car. I love it

Both mine had aircon and i have 5 friends with RA's and only one hasn't got it. A guy in our local Japanese car club had a V3 RA with electric windows which surprisingly had plastic blanks where the window winders would of been.

You need to check if it is either a wrx or sti ra. Quite different animals.

And different between versions,I believe v1/v2 sti ra has cdb. v3 wrx ra is the lightest and has the shortest gears, the v2 sti ra has the shortest final drive but slightly longer gears. There seems to differences between all versions be it sti or wrx ra. Then there is the limited ra's so quiet a minefield

Both WRX & RA have closed deck in the early cars.
The lightest is the MY93 WRX RA @ 1170kg
MY97 RA (no version numbers on non STi cars) is 1190kgs

Is yours an MY97 Joe? If so what is the option code please?

Thanks

Mine is a 95 version 2 dean. The rack is very different to my previous classics.
I've gone lock to lock with it a few times and it is very short

Ps I love your red wrx! Needs a standard twin pipe exist tho

Cheers Dean,am I right in thinking that the V3 has the best power to weight figures and the shortest gears?
Your red one is stunning and I would guess extreamly rare in that colour, even google images struggles to find one!

I have manual windows but has aircon.
How would you test if it's quick rack, would it be 2.25 turns from lock to lock joe?

Hey up rich, my v2 Sti RA is shorter geared than my Sti v3 Ra, noticeably too.
Just go full lock left to right or vice versa mate

I can't remember power to weight off the top of my head. I can check when I'm home.

The guy with the WRC car on our stand yesterday has a red one as does Phil from the site and Avinall but those are the only ones I know about so far.
Mine is the oldest road going RA on the registry with number 65xx and DRRally's rally car is the oldest RA so far with number 45xx so 2000 older than mine.

Joe. The option code will tell if you have quick rack fitted. There are 4 different option codes for the V3 STi RA. Not all have quick rack.

I'm trying to get my head round the gearing,I thought the shorter number meant shorter gears? All the RA's have mentally short gears which makes them so much fun to drive

Dean I'll get you codes etc for my car as I should really get it on the register. I'm considering buying another v1 or 2 Ra for a concours rebuild toward the back end of the year

Just to confirm, did a little digging about and the V2 STI RA does indeed have the shortest gearing,Andy Forrest has had the boxes stripped and actually counted the teeth
Wasn't doubting it but just trying to get my head round it. One of the loves of the Impreza is that they are such a complex car and differ from version to version, almost like each car is a different beasts in it's own right

You need to factor in the different final drive ratios. The V2 STI RA runs a 3.900 final drive and the MY97 WRX RA although has higher ratios in the 'box runs a much shorter final drive at 4.444.

The MY93 and MY94 WRX RA run even lower gearing - the same ratios as the MY95 cars but with a lower final drive (4.111 vs. 3.900).

This is a good summary of the various gearing options.
