From Classic to Blobeye - disappointing ?
Hi. I am thinking swapping my PPP 98 Classic 2000 (its done 178k) for a Blobeye. However, I tried out a standard '05 Blobeye WRX today and found it disappointing regards power. I guess it is not a completely fair comparison really, as the Classic has a PPP, but what do people who have had both types think ? What sort of power upgrade will the Blobeye need to give the same peformance as my Classic - would a PPP alone do the trick if I found one with it fitted ?
The Classic also feels more nimble and chuckable as well. Any comments ?
Thanks,
Tim

First of all well done getting 178k out of your classic.
Standard blob wrx is bloody slow, it's 200kg heavier than a classic too so that really doesn't help either, at the very least you want one with PPP and then a few little handling mods and a geo set up sorts them out.

Subaru added weight as time went on but didn't increase the power to match, hence why they were left behind by other manufacturers.
A bog standard blob wrx is a pretty boring car in my opinion. Throw a grand at one and it'll be a different car completly, not a patch on a mildly modded classic for pure thrill but not bad. General rule of thumb is you'll need an extra 50 bhp in a newage to match a classic.

Thanks for your replies, and they are confirming my fears that I may need at least another 80bhp from a Blobeye WRX to give me the same straight line performance as my 260(ish)bhp Classic. It looks as though it will be hard to match my old Classic for fun, even then, so I may keep with it for a while longer. Another 100k out of it would be good !!

Stop driving a Vauxhall Cavalier and get a Blobeye, it's the most iconic version. A £70 Turbo has got my 03 WRX doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and I have 3 cylinders.

I was originally looking at all sorts of impreza's when looking at buying. Had driven a friends classic of approx 340bhp and was slightly disappointed with the pull on the blob spec c ra I purchased. I can appreciate that my blob is approx 200kg heavier and has less power at 320bhp . I would expect to need around 400bhp. (A classic at 1210kg with 340bhp is 281 bhp per tonne, to match this on a blob of 1430kg you would need 402bhp) this is all on paper so doesn't really help on a decision. I think I noticed the difference as I have the twin scroll and is smoother so less punch, but looking back now I am over the moon with the blob, but honestly i think its not the car its the driver and a test drive in a few maybe a super idea..... I went on the local forum and asked and had many kind offers to take me for a spin to help me decide. All the best and good luck!! Max

I got no Intention on doing that, was just commenting and giving my findings. I do wish I'd have gone for the classic in a way, lighter etc. but have fallen in love with the new car. Saying that mind, I drove a seat leon before I switched to subaru!! Anything would've been an improvement I expect!
