gc8 2.1 stroker build
Hi guys,
Haven't posted on here for a few years. I always pop on here though and look at what people are up to with their owns builds. I have been quietly plodding along with this build as and when funds are available. Thought I would post up a build thread as I have done quite a bit to the car!
All comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcome
Bought the car 7 years ago like this
Over the next couple of years I done the usual mods, coilovers, wheels, exhaust, turbo, front mount remap etc..
Then came the carbon fibre
I had always had a vision in my head of what my perfect impreza would look like. One morning I woke up and thought to myself just do it! I am a mechanic by trade serving my apprenticeship on Land Rovers. I now work in a brewery but one of my good mates has is own garage so I rent space off him to do the work on my car!
Full credit to the guys that do these sort of projects on their driveway! I think I would struggle!!
So first things first the car was completely disassembled. We then made our own spit for the car. All the sound deadening and under seal was removed! Not a nice job at all!!

Car was taken back to bare metal underneath as there were 2 little bits of rust found but nothing major. The car was then seam welded and a weld in cage fitted by a good mate of mine that luckily works out of the same garage!
The cage is a bit overkill but as I said I wanted to build my impreza to my vision.
I am going to fit a carbon roof so off with the old one!
single piece b pillar gusset

Next was paint. I decided on ford frozen white. Phoned around and visited several paint shops. The ones that did quote were silly expensive!! I decided to give painting a go myself! I bought a good quality gun and paints, knocked up a temporary booth using clear plastic pallet wrap and I welded 3 impreza rad fans together to use as extraction!!
I watched plenty of youtube videos and spoke to a few painters to get some tips!
I done a few test pieces on scrap body parts I ha lying around. Once I was fairly happy I then got on with the car.
1st started under the car!
Next was the cage and inside.
Then the outside was painted.
Doors only got a quick coat before I ran out of paint. I will be ordering some paint next week to finish painting the doors and wings.

I have fitted new bushes and ball joints. I just need to order a couple more bushes for the rear trailing arms. My whiteline rear adjustable lateral arms arrived a couple of weeks ago. Once I get the rest of the bushes I will then again have a rolling shell.
Motor wise I have a few parts already,
ej20 CDB
version 9 cross drilled heat treated crank
cosworth rods
Omega RCM pistons
Acl bearings
APS tumbler delets
APS side feed parellel rails
Cosworth inlet manifold
Tubular unequal length headers.
HKS twin plate clutch
Next on the shopping list is a valvetrain setup
11mm cosworth headstuds
Cosworth headgasket.
Turbo wise I wanted to go rotated but not sure on what turbo yet. Im wanting around 450bhp + I want it to be fairly usable power for road use aswel as track! Any suggestions are welcomed!!
I will be using some bugeye parts for this build aswell. Dash, gearbox, rear end etc.
I have full brembo setup all round from a version 7 sti using Goodspeed rear brake kit and Goodspeed front discs!
Car currently has cusco coilovers on it but I suffer with back problems so no doubt them will be changed over.
As I said guys i'm open ears with turbo, cams setup etc so let me know!!
Thanks
Nick
I'm hoping to get the car completed this summer but obviously funds dictate!

Hi Nick
As above I would go probably with Billet 30R(GT3076 .63AR) if you want to have rotated setup,if you want still have nice 450bhp,then I would go with MDX321T or SC42,those two will works nicely on 2.1L
Cams and heads, this depends on heads what you want to use and mainly on the ECU,if yours chosen ECU can control AVCS,then I would choose JDM Big port AVCS heads and cams,Kelford V2-199-C,Supertech valves and springs
Everything depends on yours target and budget and from this I would go and choose
Good luck with the project

Cheers guys,
I am using Brand New OEM EJ257 Heat treated Crank
RCM/Omega Stroker forged Pistons (with a 0.7mm Gasket Compression will be 8.47:1)
I bought Daz Davies short motor about a month ago.
A lot of people seam to be saying a billet 30r
I have never been in a high power impreza before so its hard to realise what turbo, cams etc to go for with regards to lag and power delivery.
Head wise I wasn't planning on using Avcs heads. I'm not against it, it's just something I haven't looked into!
Think I need to have a good look through people's build threads. There seems to be a lot of high power builds and a wealth of knowledge on scoobynet these days.

Think you need to change the thread name, bit more than just a engine build. Looks really good though, just make sure it gets finished.
If your aiming at 450ish then cams aren't essential, quite an expensive addition to the build but Avcs heads help spool up quicker although as said your then looking at a syvecs ecu to run them.
450 will make a very quick car in a classic, don't get into chasing numbers as it will never end, another project killer

I think he is talking about the drilled oil feed holes that the Subaru cranks have,if you have not been in a powerful Subaru before I would suggest that you get a drive of one or a passenger ride at least to see and feel what sort of setup and turbo response that you are looking for,a 2.1 can be built to a very high power level and what you really need to do is decide your max power you want to be running your car at and then fit the smallest or quickest responsive turbocharger that will do the job.SJ.

Before you start getting into your engine build it sounds like you have not thought it out to well you have to try to make the important decisions early and stick to them as when you are chopping and changing ideas about that is when you start to make wrong choices that can cost you dearly later on financially.as when your build progresses you will have so much miscellaneous parts that you did not think that you needed to buy crop up and have to be added to your build trust me when I say good planing is the key to a relatively stress free build.SJ.

Power wise 500 was a number in my head when I 1st started this project, but I don't want to get caught up in chasing numbers I just want a decent amount of usuable power.
Yeah I would love a passenger ride in a big power impreza. I don't know of anyone local to me though

Hi Nick
As above has been pointed out,you need to know what power you want to run and from this I would go
Build the engine, which will last upping the bhp targets, its bad when you start and then realize those 500bhp is not really enough and you want something extra and more
AVCS will help spool,if you want have best then JDM Big port AVCS I would choose and I would keep JDM cams and springs/valves,those heads are best and offers great spool up,just problem with them, they're hard to get and if yes then price for them can be higher or even can be cracked around spark plugs etc(we are went via 4 sets of JDM heads)
Turbo, agree 30r will and is the best option for 2.1L,although as above I've said MDX321T or SC42 can be good option too and maybe cheaper too

Your chasing numbers though Jura if 500 isn't enough, that or competing in some form of drag racing or sprinting. That's where you and your brother seemed to go, 2.1 stroker barely run in then a 2.35, lots of expense and grief.
It's nice having an amazing spec sheet but is it always needed? If you've got to really stretch yourself financially it's not worth it.
Anyway, as SJ said, plan the build well, build it once. I've only got 410/410 in a full fat type r and that's plenty quick enough for the road, not been on track yet with this one but you don't need massive power to have a well sorted track car

I have some actual driving feedbackmy mate has just dropped around my house to show off his fully forged 2.1 running a billeted Scooby Clinic GT30 and there was barely any lag I understand now why Jura put one on his 2.35 as that must of been instant boost pressure as the GT30 spooled up like a TD04,very punchy and a nice midrange that I could not use as there was not enough road and too much traffic a lovely car and will definitely be the way I go if my wife's car ever needs a rebuild.SJ.

Yes mate, from my own experience if you have never driving a rotated turbo set up you need to the boost comes in differently and more aggressive that's why when I started my project it was based around that turbo positioning,I asked him to join up on here and show it off but he does not like the scoobynet forum vibe,he skims the forum sometimes for ideas and to check out my project but that's it really.SJ.

im guessing i will need a new down pipe/up-pipe and intake hose.does he run an external wastegate?

Yes he does mate, his build is quite comprehensive he runs the Lateral performance 2.1 forged kit RCM rotated pipe work,SCGT30 billet turbo and a Turbosmart wastegate that I looked at into getting myself not many people run them over here but it is a quality actuator, all run with a updated Alcatek ecu,the only thing he needs to sort out is his brake setup, the Subaru four pots and two pots rear can not really cope with the power that his car is putting out,SJ.

I don't really know,he was just with me for half an hour,so I just took it out for a quick drive but trust me when I say it's definitely 500+ He is running a -63 exhaust housing which seems that it is"PERFECT" for his set up.I have just asked Ian if there is Anymore of those AP kits that he was selling still available at that price as my friend can barely afford to put petrol in it.Lol.SJ.
