Default Another white Type R...

After many years without a Scooby I’m back! I had a 95 WRXaround seven years ago, since then I’ve had a FTO with nitrous etc, a 200sxS13, Evo 8, BMW X5, ML270d, 200sx S14A running 450bhp, K5 GSX-R 600 and I alsostill own a classic mini and the wife has a 2005 WRX in blue.

So I’ve bought myself a 1997 v3 STI Type R, with around 50kon the clock, in white.

I haven’t actually drove the car yet as I’m working away atthe moment, I bought it via the internet and the wife picked it up (as well asthe subsequent parts I ordered!).

Photos are from the advert on pistonheads –

Already on the car

· Apexi dump valve
· Apexi boost gauge
· Blitz turbo timer
· K&N air filter
· Stainless steel exhaust (unknown if de-cattedetc)
· Roof scoop (cosmetic only)
· STI v8 Bonnet scoop
· V6 front bumper & Jun splitter

Bought so far

· Prova Nurburgring ECU
· SARD fuel pressure regulator with gauge
· Walbro 255ltr Fuel pump
· Front mount intercooler
· Cusco coilovers with pillowball top mounts
· Blue Hel braided brake hoses
· Advan 5 spoke lightweight racing wheels

On the shopping list

· Bigger injectors & rails
· Cosworth sump baffle
· Cosworth oil pump
· Oil cooler
· Lightweight pulleys
· New clutch & lightweight flywheel
· Oil pressure & temp gauges
· Cusco handbrake button
· Alloy radiator cooling panel
· P1 drivers side fog cover & normal passengerside one
· STI v6 rear spoiler
· Rays/Volk TE37’s
· Some powdercoating
· Possibly full de cat inc downpipe & up pipe(depending what’s on it!)

Plans are to use it as a run about when I’m home at themoment but looking to turn it into a road legal track car, mainly for Knockhillbut looking at a trip to the ‘ring every now and again, and possibly sometracks down south.
Any advice is welcomed, and I will try to keep this updated as my project progresses

Also looking to see what anyone knows about the ecu? Just how you found it, best mods to get the most out of it etc. I've done a bit of searching and found someone saying its from a car Prova entered in a race/series at the 'ring? Any ideas on the truth of that? Also found this that someone had posted as a response from Prova -

Our ECU is best suited for Subaru EJ20 engine.
1) ignition timing map; advanced timing from 1700rpm. about 3 deg.
Best ignition timing brings more response and more torque.
( We adjusted ignition timing as 98 octane number petrol which is Japan premium petrol)
I know 96 octane number petrol in UK. It is better for you to use octane booster .

2) turbo boost map; standard setting is 1.08 bar at 4500rpm, 0.9 bar at 5200rpm over.
Our setting is 1.2 bar at 4500rpm, 1.0 bar at 5200 rpm over.

3) adaptability
ECU data can adapt to any exhaust type or intake system.
But we know the direct air intake system without air box from engine room is not good for high performance. The reason is breathe in hot air from engine room, and intake air fall into disorder by intake trumpet , air mass meter cannot measure collect
intake mass. It is need air chamber as same as standard air filter box.
Our test result: exhaust pipe diameter is 60mm at turbo outlet, 70mm os best for exhaust muffler pipe .
With best regards,

I think he is saying that where people generally fit an aftermarket air filter in the open engine bay, this is worse for performance as hot air is drawn in from the engine bay surround. The standard approach is to use an airbox which acts to shield the heat away from the intake. If an aftermarket airfilter is to be used, they recommend an air box approach, or at least one away from the direct engine bay i.e. inner arch.

Just my thoughts!

James, thanks for your reply.

Yeah I was thinking of making up a box to cover the filter for the heat, wondering what would be better for the disruption in the air flow he talks about? I was thinking carbon fibre with some heat reflective material lining it.

I was also looking at te ARC air boxes but I don't think these fit with the pipe work for a front mount?

Also done a good bit of searching and it appears that the race I mentioned is the 24hr Nurburgring that Prova enter every year, comming second on 2005. I also managed to find a picture of a GC8 they used for this before they started their partnership with STI to enter the competition.

Well I'm still not home for another 5 weeks or so however today it was in the garage to get head gaskets and timing belt changed and I found out it needs a new radiator, so today saw the following parts being bought -

·Goki alloy radiator
·CDF lightweight pulleys in black
·650cc injectors with rails

The air con is also going to be removed while the pulleys are getting done.

Having spoke to a member on here who also had the Prova ecu, it doesn't look like I will be de-catting the full system as he confirmed my suspicions of boost creep with the ecu and de-cats.

So I think power mods are nearly finished, and just a couple reliability ones left to do in the engine bay, then some powdercoating.

·Oil cooler
·Cosworth sump baffle
·Oil catch can
·Heat shield/box and smooth intake pipe for induction kit
·Alloy radiator cooling panel
·swirl pot
·Knocklink
·Oil pressure & temp gauges and a water temp gauge
·uprated clutch and lightened flywheel

Then it will be time to move to the outside with

·P1 drivers side fog cover with cold air intake to filter & normal passengerside one
·STI v6 rear spoiler
·Rays/Volk TE37’s with some Federal/Toyo rubber

Then inside I want

·Cusco handbrake button
·decent gear ****
·leather gear gaiter

Brakes and suspension

·Whiteline arbs'
·uprated discs and pads
·Cusco master cylinder stopper

So things are getting there, you never know I might even drive it one day!
