Default Project : map my own car with a new 2.5 installed

this thread is for all the haters who said i would blow it up

after getting a 2.5 sti short block installed a month or so ago, i had to get a new ecu, i found a cheap apexi one and splashed out on the apexi lead + software package from zen

after having some difficulty getting the program to install because it was expecting a jap operating system, i hacked the installer files to enable it to install on my machine.

i also had to use bablefish to convert my details into japanese to let me register it

anyway.

i had 2 apexi ecus at this point in my possession (long story)

one of them was mapped to a 22b on uk fuel so i downloaded that map for safekeeping and to compare it with the stock 2.0 apexi basemap

both the apexi ecus were sent to a well known mapper from this forum, he used one in a customers car, and sent me one back with a quick 2.5basemap on it

now at this point i had 3 saved maps to play with, i printed out all 3 and studied them side by side for a long time to get a general feel for what was going on (bare in mind the apexi software is in Japanese LOL)

after working out most of the translations and running in the 2.5 conversion on the supplied 2.5 basemap (cheers you know who, unsure if you want named in this thread?), i then removed it and reinstalled a modified version of the 22b map i had (pulled a bit of timing out)

for the next few weeks after installing a innovate wideband, i did little tweaks here and there, just getting a feel for different changes and doing things slowly, better safe then sorry

the engine was not detting according to my logs so i started adjusting the fueling.

at first i ran the cruise areas at 14.5afr and on boost fueling at around 10afr while increasing the boost

after a few more tweaks (over a few days), i had the midrange boost running at 1.6bar (td05-16g) with no det, started leaning the AFR`s off to approx 16 cruise and 11.4 on boost.

small little steps, basically going into work early, while logging, getting to work, looking at the logs, adjusting the map and then doing another log on the way home from work to monitor any changes (hence why its taken me a while)

i suspected i had my fueling pretty much 100% sorted, so today i rang my mate up and asked for a quick dyno run on his rollers

some results

i did this log at 12 oclock today on the road

3rd gear run

from approx 1600rpm to a smidge over 6k

red = rpm
green = injector duty
grey = ignition timing
blue = coolant temp
yellow = boost
pink = knock

max of 1.57bar boost in 3rd gear, tapering down to 1.18bar at 6krpm
max knock count of 7
afrs around 11.4 on boost(separate logworks log)

i then did this log a few hours later on the rolling road

boost is down a little bit as expected (1.5bar peak 1.1bar at 6krpm) the rest seams pretty much the same

the results so far

302 BHP - 353.5 LBFT

i have been told that once i start dialling the ignition timing back in, i will start to gain the peak power (removed a bit while testing to be safe)

some pics from today

a local goon seams to think that i am "scared" to post my results so far on scoobynet, probably in fear of getting "ripped"

but for all you old timers from this forum who have seen some of my other project threads, i doubt that will happen

i have proper man sized ***** me

iirc around £170 for the apexi software/cable

cant remember how much the wideband was now, but it comes with its own logging software as well

Can't you integrate a linear 0-5v wideband trace into the Apexi software, like you can with the datalogit?

BTW, why did you choose the genuine Apexi software over the datalogit? - There's not much difference in price, and the datalogit is in English!

i could not get a datalogit at the time

but!

i have since discovered that you can run a 5 volt wideband voltage direct to the PFC and view the voltages via the commander

if you do a log with the commander pro lead and software, and then save it, you can load it up in the "proper" version of the software (FC-PRO available from all dodgy geezers on the net lol) and it does actually log afr`s and such

at the moment i have my widebands narrowband output programmed from 0-3volts

1.45volts is 14.5 afr at the moment for me so its easier to check things without comparing 2 separate logs

doing a log with the commander pro lead and software and then playing it back in FC-PRO shows you everything bar the extra o2 sensor they put up the exhaust pipe

you can also use FC-PRO to access all the "hidden" features, although i could never get FC-PRO to use my cable to log data direct for some reason

after messing with the jap software quite a bit, i have now taught myself some japanese LOL

here is the same log put into FC-PRO to show the extra information available

as you can see, it actually records quite a bit more information, its just that the "end user" software does not allow you to view it

Well done Micky,

A friend and I did exactly the same useing different software. We managed to get brilliant results on our cars. And yes most the people from the local forum we use gave us the "Warnings". It is not Easy Peasy as some suggest but it is possible. As you say "a little bit at a time" with plenty of logging. Keep up the good work.

i have not really touched the map since to be honest!

engine is due to come out soon as i suspect i might have cracked a ring land due to to much boost

i was running/had mapped it to 1.65 bar on the road
and was warned not to run more then 1.4 bar on the stock pistons LOL

it was feckin hauling *** mind

was planning on having it removed and the pistons changed anyway, as i could not live with it on 1.4 bar boost (i did try but it felt slow lol but i kept getting warned about the ringlands)

plan is to pull the lump, add some forged pistons, slightly bigger injectors and push for 1.7 bar boost, hopefully it should crack 400bft

should be getting the pistons sorted within the new month!

will update it once they are in/run in and i start turning the boost up a bit more

I hope you considered the G/Box & Clutch Mick. coz the standard transmission is going to have one hell of a time with 400Lb's of torque.

But i sure look forward to you setting up a new projects thread when you strip the engine and rebuild......then Map again.

Catch up soon
