Default Classic Project - warning and please help!

Hi All

Thought I'd share my new project and seek your advice.

I've just bought a 94 import WRX. Exhaust (don't know full spec yet) and bailey dump valve are only mods - that I know about.

Before seeing Andy F (I live just outside Edinburgh) i thought it prudent to sort the stopping and handling first.

I'd heard that the brakes on early imprezas were bad, but was shocked after a short, but spirited, run around the local twisties left me with scary stopping power and a smell the local fire brigade would normally be rushing to. Having searched the web (especially this site) I found that Godspeed's kit appeared to be good value and highly recommended - any arguments?

Now, I don't like to do things by halves, so I want the 335mm conversion, which obviously won't fit behind my standard 15" wheels - so I'll need to move onto 17s. I'm keeping an eye out on ebay, but if anyone has a set lying around within collection distance (50 miles) let me know.

Once I've done this I'll be fitting a K&N and an Apexi from Andy F.

The scary thing is that I got the car (minted, 60k miles) for £3.5k and now I aim to spend a further 2k just bringing it up to spec for some Knockhill fun - no wonder I stuck to rwd escorts for so many years - hope I get good money for these to finance the scoob.

To save some cash I'm considering either just springs or off-the-shelf suspension kits. Does anyone recommend a particular spring that works well with the standard dampers and any feedback on good road kits would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

I'd be tempted to look at trying to get hold of some STI suspension (dampers and springs) from the 1999/2000 model year cars (called Version5 and Version6). These are good for back road use and ok for occasional track use. You should be able to pick some up from a breakers for £300-500.

Geometry and stiffening up the chassis plays a big part in getting the Impreza to handle well. Do a search in the suspension forum for an idea on cost effective upgrades.

For 17" wheels, a cheap option is to get hold of a set of newage Impreza 17" alloys.

Don't forget, if you mean the 335 conversion using Subaru calipers you'll have to get a set of the 4 pot calipers fitted to later cars.

Ian does do other kits using Brembo/AP and other calipers which are great value and Ian is an exceptionally good guy to deal with.
