so far I have goals in my mind, but thats where they're staying, for now
2.0L block from a leggy that done its head gasket.
need to send block away for building as I dont want to undertake that, before building its having a testing session just to make sure.
As I type Im looking into rods, bearings, pulleys and pistons.
While I understand a good build costs, Im not going to throw money away so Im looking at all angles before making any purchases.
I had hoped to pick up some sti5/6 heads and cams but none have been forthcoming, so I may have to have my UK heads "seen too" and keep a lower rev limit.
the object is to put together a (as near as dammit) bullet proof forged bottom end.
I already have a fairly healthy spec on the car, and a new rcms modified oil pump ready to drop in.
The mrs. has finally allowed me to get alternative transport as well, so I can take a bit of time with it off the road

I have seen wiseco pistons and pauter rods in a job lot from the states for $1155, but Im weighing up the possibility of a good builder and if I buy parts from him then It can be considerably easier in the long run with a lot less hassle

i have got one of these to do aswell, it started to knock in the upper speed range!!!!!!!!!! i have got a spare engine which is ready to go in so once that is done i will divert my attention to THE BLOCK i would be interested to see what you intend doing with your one, as my goal is similar?

Peanuts, the rod and piston combo you mention, is it from www.importperformanceparts.net? If so thats where i got mine from. Took about 3 months to get them on my door step due to the Pauter rods needed making for the order. Was getting pi55ed off and worried that i may have dealt with someone dodgy but they turned up and are ready to go in my rebuild.
Possibly something similar to yourself but using a STi 7 semi closed block. Car is an STi 5 so already got the heads etc...
Looking for 400-450bhp so far, dont want a massively laggy engine so will probably be happy at 400 with a suitable turbo.

Have you got a budget in mind Andy? Have you any time scale for this project?
For the effort of the build I'd want upper 400's, I'm hoping you want that too so it'll be interesting to follow your progress to see if you get there

goals are tricky, high 400's on a 2.0 is going to mean a fairly chunky garrett, which = lag, generally.
so a goal might be to aim for as much boost as possible on a bomb proof bottom end, spend time/effort/money on the heads and maybe, just maybe spec it to take a 50 shot
I do however have a couple of ideas in my head that will make a public airing soon enough and might make a high boost 2.0L interesting below 4k rpm.

i am also thinking bigger power, my car feels too slow so up the cc she goes. but im in no hurry as well. picking a turbo is easy isnt it but the choice of engine is very hard. im leaning towards 2.2/2.3ltr with a nice garret yours will be an expensive build wont it as you will have to plan for bigger injectors, better gearbox and the engine and turbo its a big ££££ task to take on now

gearbox is in place Steve, sti5/6 unit and P1 diff. Im looking at a PPG gearset though should the worst happen.
grand for any blower these days,injectors say £400?

quick update...
The car has been off the road for about 2 months now, even SORN'd at the gpo, really starting to suck as it goes.
I removed the inlet manifold as I wanted to shield from the block with some tuffnol spacers, this will also allow a "slightly enlarged" turbo upgrade at a later date.
As I had the inlet off I started looking around at little jobs I could do while there was more space.
BIG MISTAKE.
Something I would not recommend anyone do ever.
The rails got sent to MEF for chopping/coating and brazing to take -6 fittings.

I wanted to add some heatproof/reflective material to the front mount pipe as it passes over the turbo, so I did.
Firstly it was wrapped with Agriemach's finest, then I sprayed it with black HT paint, then I thought that black paint was a daft idea.
so I wrapped it with kitchen foil and used some duck tape over any joins (or tears ). That looked a bit "too" DIY (even by my low standards) so I "ahem" borrowed some Air-con silver tape from the plumbers on site
This stuff is mustard, about 6" wide, about 60m long, silver and (wahay) self adhesive.

now I think the biggest problem with the pipe is not the heatsoak, more the clearance over the turbo!

but it looks like it might do a fair job of keeping the heat at bay!
I also had a look at the inlet pipe to the compressor housing, my one was well passed bin-time, it had big tears in it and the seal to the turbo was almost non existant!
it had been mapped ok for fuel twice though.
I had a look at the samco item, I was offered a (flimsy) 3 ply version for little money.
So I did a mock up as its easy to fit with the inlet off
a couple of well positioned jubilees to add strength, and all the breathers blanked off.

I didnt like it, so I decided to try to get one made in mild steel.
Its visible in the 2nd samco pic above, wrapped in judo belt with a couple of snap straps.
This meant that I needed a better way of reducing from my phase2 (90mm) maf housing, down to my 63mm hard inlet.
Floyd told me about the way he did exactly the same thing on his own car, cheers Floyd , so I shamelessley copied it.
And looked for a phase2 K&N kit, obviously on the cheap!

Bonus of an as new filter as well
The manifold is still off at the moment, but Carl has come up trumps with the spacers so hopefully it could be on the road again in a few weeks, realistically more like a month.

well, its been 3 months since the beastie was last used in anger.
What started out as a simple engine bay tidy up ended up me stripping everything out in the end.
but it all all came good on saturday.

To say that progress had been slow was an understatement.
It’s actually been something like 4 or 5 months off road when alls said and done.
The nitty gritty is above, the object was simple engine bay tidy up and de-clutter and as each part came out for cleansing, more jobs were unearthed, in fact, it was never ending.
I won’t bore you with the insignificant details, but I will highlight those mods that I think are worthwhile and cost effective.
Firstly, manifold spacers.

Big thanks to Carl Davey for this one, they do a fantastic job of keeping the inlet manifold cooler which means the runners aren’t cooking the charge as much as OE setup
The manifold was actually cold to the touch after track sessions at Bruntingthorpe at the weekend, and that was using all the revs and all the power.
To run hand in hand with that, I bought a pack of Halfords small plastic washers to lift and insulate the coolant header tank.

Doesn’t look like much but all insulation is a good thing in my eyes.
I had been toying with the heatshield idea since before the old king died, now the engine was out I had plenty of room to sort out the design and get it fixed in place.

Agriemach exhaust wrap and adhesive aluminium tape from work, I like it and at the track I could feel how good a job it was doing, the engine side was hot and the filter very cool.
I wrapped the fmic pipework where it passed hot engine bits, it all helps to keep the charge cooler.

Ive fab'd up the top cover to close the whole thing out completely,
yet to work out how to fit it while maintaining quick release...?
The bonnet scoop is back, cant fault it for cold air delivery.

Im not convinced its not acting like a chimney when stationary though, will try to log temps with and without.
Apologies to those who are familiar with sunny Hampshire, I have used the local site as an aid-memoire and have been posting small progress, so the pics will look familiar.

I tilted my header to fit the insulators as I haven't sorted the bottom fixing yet. I'll be stopping the radiated heat from the header tank too at some point...
