In rather a rash move, I've "won" a Land Rover Discovery 300 TDi intercooler for less than £50. I don't know what size it is but from the pics I'm guessing conservatively at 250x200x40, which having just measured my slanty TMIC is smaller than standard (roughly 390x115x66).
So, if it is smaller (by about 30%) is it a complete non-starter or will mounting it as an FMIC make up for the difference in size?
Opinions very much valued,
Cheers
Edited to add: don't worry, I have a back-up plan if this doesn't work out

Aye, thats the bugger! Don't suppose you know exact core size on it do you?
Back up plan is Land Rover TD5 cooler (which is quite large) or I might throw caution to the wind and track down a Volvo 740 intercooler which is aparently "fapping huge".
The plan is that my basic pipework remains the same and the ends nearest the cooler can be changed i.e. £50 cooler to start, then when I have more cash spec a bigger core and the end tanks I want which is still cheaper than buying a kit (although not as developed). I'd be happier starting with something the same volume as my current IC. Of course one argument is "why not use the standard IC and remount". Hmm, there's an idea...

Ive been thinking about doing this for some time, I found this website http://www.turbomustangs.com/intercoolers.htm, it mainly has American car intercoolers but does have some Japanese and European car parts on show.

Woohoo, my cheapo IC turned up today and now I've measured it properly, it's about 13% bigger than standard and will fit in the front bumper recess nicely. The budget for the whole project is £100, so I need to find some ally tubing and some Samco bends etc. cheap, any leads appreciated, in the meantime I'll be lurking around some scaffolding

for cheap bends, pipework etc, looks to your local accesory shop for 60mm exhaust parts. I did a front mount for my brothers corrado g60, and you can get bends etc in those kind of diameters and cut them down. Also get 2m lengths.
For joins, get radiator hoses of lorrys. These slip over the exhaust pipe bits, and again come in 2m lengths.
Total cost for all bits required, probably about 50 quid. (not including decent hose clamps)
