Default My slow moving 04 STI Project

Hello everyone, just thought i'd do a write up of my small project so far...
please give me any tips you might have, i'd like to have 400/400 at the end of this project! This write up may also help others who want to take similar modding routes...Â*Â*

I bought my 04 STI in November 2015, completely standard except for a prodrive back box and 48k on the clock. The last owner had it for 8 years and he lived on my road - So knowing that the car sat on the driveway for almost all of its life i couldn't help my self in making sure i got this car!

I bought a 340brake 04 WRX 2 years ago which didn't last longer than 6 weeks unfortunately. Since then i've always wanted to get a scooby again and get it modded my self with quality parts.

So here goes ....

December 2015 my baby boy arrives, forgot all about the scooby for a month, come end of February 2016 i couldn't sit still anymore and had the itch to buy something for the scoob.

I didnt want to go all crazy, ive got a 8week old son so something subtle.. k&N panel filter .

People kept asking whats next and whens it going to be pushing some serious power.. my reply was im taking this slowly, dont really want to rush it, i want toÂ*Â*enjoy this and mod it bit by bit through the year....

Next i had my old pioneer double din screen laying around from the last scooby so decided that can go in, looked much nicer than a single din and pocket Also improved the sound over stock!

April 2016, discovered more on the forum and Revolution Motorsports website.. OH OH

Gave them a call on my lunch break...

Always wanted a Blitz Nurspec and they said its £490 compared to the £540 I've seen everywhere else! how can i say no to that, so the kind dude put that into the cart! Thought might aswell see if i can get some Tein springs discounted ? He says yes you can get some discount but its not much. £160 for the springs, so added that to the bill and awaited delivery.

My dad is going to hit the roof when he sees these parts turning up! I have always modded all my cars and when my dad asks whats that for the answer is always "oh that old exhaust is rusted so i needed a new one" , "the old springs arent safe anymore"

The blitz turned up and dad is not impressed when i open the package.... he says isnt it a bit small Not the reaction i normally get but this is good !!! Im going to continue ordering some more parts

Next ive been perving on the Godspeed J Hook Brakes for some stopping as my old brakes were screaming every time i touched them! On the phone to Godspeed a few times with no answer, finally got through few days later and ordered full sets all round with pads. Must say these brakes look amazing! Feel amazing! much more bite over standard! £320 plus delivery these are now also sitting in the dining room with all the other parts.

Mum is getting pissed off as i'm starting to take over her space in the dining.
April 21st - woke up a bit too early for work, hmm lemme call a few garages and see if they can fit my brakes today...

few calls later and on the way to work dropped the car off to a local garage to fit the brakes and springs! Cost: £160 labour and the f****rs made my rear seats so dirty!

Handling feels good but not good enough, quite bumpy and needs more stiffening!

I wasn't aware the blitz system is not a true 3" system so was very disappointed! Contacted hayward and scott who happily did a small modification to the 2.5" end! They made a slip on 3" adaptor which fits great! Also bought the 1 piece downpipe to match the full 3" system. £300 for modification and downpipe. So the exhaust system in total has cost me £790 - Should have waited a bit longer and bought the Tomei ti Expreme for a bit more! But atleast i've got that famous Blitz sound coming soon!

Next step was to clean my filthy engine bay, very scared of using a steam cleaner etc..... so just a shammy and some hot water for about 3.5hours did the trick! Its always been serviced at subaru its past life so i cant understand why they didnt clean the engine bay! years of grime, 80% now clean!

Some research later decided to give Rich@FB Tuning a call... he advised me to get a 3 port boost solenoid, DEI heat wrap, and an uprated fuel pump along with some NGK PFR7!

Scoobyworx had some decent pricing so ordered from them, the 290 fuel pump which are all tested so peace of mind. Was tempted to get the RCM but really its just the same sh*t isnt it plus RCM tax? total £176 including discount

DEI Titanium heat wrap from euro car parts for £44 with 20% discount

Got all the items and booked in for FB Tuning for first week in May! Booked some annual leave and off we go!

Exciting day, up at 5am off to pick up my cousin from N London... 2 hours later get to fb tuning for 8:15, looks like an industrial estate , couldnt see FB Tuning anywhere. drove down to the closest McDees as we were getting quite hungry and couldnt see any local cafe's. hour later ended up coming back to the same place, his workshop was around the back! Rich dont like people being late please take note! who does anyway? told us to wait let the car cool whilst he worked on someone elses car. I was booked in to come in for 8.30-9 but mcdeez made us 19minutes late!

spent a few hours in Aylesbury, went to the cinema, on the way back get a call from Rich! BAAAAAAD NEWS!!!! All the parts are fitted.

THE MOTORS GOT NO MOT! < exactly my face!

He cant drive it and map it, too much risk so have to drive it all the way back to london and get someone to MOT it, dont forget his fitted ALL the parts! Cant believe i forgot to MOT! feel like a right c*nt.

What a waste of a day. Rich put a base map on and blocked off the boost solenoid so i couldnt boost to over .5bar. Billed £620 in total to fit the parts (£350 towards the map!)

Rich advised to get some new oil as she needed it! Came back a week later with some Fuchs 10w50 as recommendedÂ*Â*by rich. from Opie oils 6L with next day delivery for £56.70, was told to get genuine black filter but with so little time the only filter i could arrange for guaranteed next day delivery was RCM oil filter from Advanced Automotives. works out cheaper than buying form RCM directly! £24.95 delivered next day.

Back to FB Tuning about a week later to get the remap done again properly! Rich took it out for about an hour, it came back resulting 335ish bhp on his road dynamometer software. He said he didnt really want to give it too much as it felt very tight. I think that may have something to do with the car sitting on the drive most of its life?

Rich is a knowledgeable person, knows his stuff and importantly doesnt cut corners! He noticed my handbrake needed adjusting so did that on the cables under the car first and then the inside adjustment. He also fixed a minor kink issue with my window washer piping. Changed the oil and filter. £30 for oil change and £50 for the mapping time. £700 later, i can say Rich is a decent mapper- the car now pulls in every gear very smooth. Gear 4 is much longer and is more road friendly at speed! Even driving at 20mph in gear 2 in traffic is so much smoother! 50mph in gear 6, 2k revs its so smooth and steady, easier to maintain the speed - and thats very important to me as i use the a13 dual carriage everyday!

Its nothing like my old WRX, this feels so much stronger . Rich advised me not to do speeds of over 100mph on the top mount, i wish i knew this beforehand as i would have bought one before the map! whats the point of having almost 400bhp if you cant chill at speeds of over 100!

The car just wants to go, at 120 it just holds boost and continues to go like a train! this is the most i've given it as i love my car and dont want to risk anything breaking! I promised my self no more mods for another year but i think a FMIC might just come in for christmas

I would recommend Rich at FB Tuning to everyone for mechanical and mapping work, clean workshop, tidy work. knows his job well!
