Default B3nmw blob eye project

I thought I would start up a project thread for my blob eye. I purchased a 53 plate blob sti roughly about 4 years ago from mr auto, mountain ash, South Wales ( I think the name has possibly changed to one direction cars).

I did have my heart set on a jdm blob eye at first as the better specification over the uk cars, I liked the shape of the blob eye and fancied something newer as I previously owned a sti type r v3. I hadn't had the type r for long, the engine gave out when I was hammering it, I took it to read racing in Cwmbran where it had a recon engine fitted. Since having the engine fitted there was a whole host of problems with it, not running right, turbo failure, exhaust not bolt back together. I was originally going to do the type r up, however on Boxing Day the cam belt snapped, I got the car back to the garage in Cwmbran.

The garage didn't accept any responsibility for and wanted to charge me storage charges. I reckon from when the engine originally failed it must of been there about 11 times, it was a joke.

I took the car to Tiley a garage In Bristol, they found a whole host of problems with it, such as incorrectly fitted parts, bent to **** radiator probably when they got the engine out. Dave at Tiley was very helpful in our case to take Andy read of read racing to court. We won the judgement in court £5000 however since mr read declared bankruptcy, we didn't get anything.

The car was sold to Chris Palmer Motorsport in Bristol, just enough to cover the costs of diagnosis that was carried out at Tiley. It would be nice to know what ever hadn't to it.

It was a very stressful time and wife was mainly dealing with most of the paperwork with regards to the car, garages, courts and bail lifts to try and get money out of mr read. As mentioned earlier the second failed on Boxing Day, we were getting married in April so money was really tight.

Me and the wife fancied another impreza, but took some time off as we were still paying for the wedding. I think it was about by June time we both decided it was time to come back to the impreza seen. I did fancy a jdm blob, we seen one online from auto prestige in Bradford. It was blue jdm blob 54 plate, looked ok. I took it out for a test drive and to be honest wasn't all that impressed. Upon further inspection of the car revealed it was in fact a wrx jdm and not a sti jdm. The give away was the 5 speed box and red no brembo calipers, I was pissed right off as it took me about 4 hours to get there and the car was a wrx

The garage weren't helpful at all and couldn't wait to get from there.

However in the coming weeks my father in law spotted one from sale in mountain ash which isn't to far from newport, a lot closer than Bradford. The car was a 53 plate uk blob sti, it looked good and was standard apart from a ninja back box and a chav valve.
I thought it would be wise to take someone who knows their subaru's, so I asked sti Glenn to have a look with me and test drive it as his 1st impreza was a uk blob sti. The car drove well for a standard car, it obviously was a world apart from the type r in its standard form.

I bought the car, the garage mot it. However they wouldn't service it in with the price, I did try. The brakes I noticed where poor so the garage fitted new front pads which helped out. I took it to Keith price a Subaru dealer in Abergavenny, which was where the car was originally from. It was a 50k service, from looking at the service records it only missed one service, gutting as it would be fsh.

Default Since 50k service

Since owning the car I haven't really done much to it. I have maintained its services, usually about every 4 to 6k miles. Servicing is someone that I don't skimp on, these are performance cars and need to be serviced regularly.

I did start adding some parts to it. The main thing I wasn't to keen on was the breaking compability of the car. I noticed Godspeed brakes where doing a deal on with their own discs and ebc blue stuff pads. I thought I would give them ago as I the brakes were lacking. Discs and pads all round made a big difference, however they do seem to be noisey at first.

Other things I did was Zun sport front and lower grills in chrome, I really liked these at first however I might get the sprayed black to give the car a more meaner look. I added a lower splitter like the jdm one which really sets the car apart, why they didn't come out of the factory like this I will never know. I also purchased a shark fin spoiler, similar to the evo ones. The spoiler was left off though at this time.

Things started to take a change in work as most people with the recession, I was getting less work and was sometimes on a 4 day week, which was **** as I like chasing the money. A glimmer hope arrived though in my first born. Months past and I realised to wasn't viable to run the blob as a family car, petrol and kid in the back etc. when things started to pick up we decided to getting another car I.e mainly for my wife and child. We decided to go the oil burning route in the form of a 07 seat Leon fr tdi, which is very impressive. However after Xmas it started to get quiet in work and also the impreza had a problem at first I thought it was with the boost. I therefore decided to sorn the vehicle and drop back to one car as I had the works van for most of the time.

The sti was off the road for about ten months. I got it back on the road, however wanted to get its issues sorted, therefore I took it to the 3 arches in Cardiff where they fitted an excedy pink clutch, skimmed the flywheel and serviced it. What a transformation, I could drive the car properly again.

Xmas time last year my wife bought me an rcm induction kit, looks the dogs. Also I had the shark fin spoiler fitted several months later. Since then the spoiler has started splitting at each tooth, had to happy. I will probably get the spoiler removed and get a hawk eye one fitted instead. I also picked up a hawk eye speedo cluster as I like the look of them, similar to the jdm ones. I haven't fitted the cluster as yet as the wiring isn't a straight 4ward swap and I don't fancy ****ing it up.

Default Project gathers

Due to the gd service I had at the 3 arches I decided to have a service as it was due a service. I also noticed there was a coolant leak from the small header tank, from closer inspection it was spilt inside. I ordered a rally tech one was there was a group buy one them. I the 3 arches had problems with the header tank as it was leaking from one of the welds, I therefore had it swapped for a genuine Subaru item. Tim was very helpful at rally tech and therefore I got my money back, must of just been an unlucky one. Continuing with the service however revealed oil in the down pipe section which was concluded the turbo was on its way out. So not to happy with the results, however it decided it was time to get my **** into gear.

Since the service a coupler of months ago I have slowly been acquiring parts:

.3 " cobra exhaust from the turbo back, but I didn't want the hassle mot time so I went with their sport cats
.sc 42 billet from sc as they seem to be popular with good results
. perrin turbo blanket
. Perrin 3 port boost solenoid
. Rcm 340 fuel pump
. Samco turbo hose
. NGk iridium 7 plugs
. Rcm headers
. Thermal velocity wrap for headers
. Rcm fitting for headers
. 3 bolt Harvey smith trick up pipe
. Bc br coil overs
. Cdf alk, cdf front and rear anti roll bars, cdf front and rear drop links

That's pretty much as far as it goes for now. I know I need to add more parts, and get some pictures up. Il try and get some uploaded 2moro.

bin the rubbish roof turd mate and get a genuine hawk spoiler, they are rare and expensive but easy to fit if you use the correct method which is rivnuts. it took me several months to find a genuine one but genuine parts are street ahead of cheap stuff.
i have also fitted the sweeping clocks, it requires a few wiring changes but nothing too hard to do.
having a fmic on my car i have the zunsport grills too, dont bother spraying them as it will chip off in weeks, better to sell and buy the black ones as these are a tougher powder coat finish.

I don't fancy the extra costs, piping extra with a Fmic at the current stage. However if I do need one in the future then I will have to get one. The car is a road car which will be used mainly as a weekend toy. Cheers

great spec list there mate, ive picked up most of the same bits off here in recent months, you are going to need an fmic though as you are going to top 400 bhp comfortably and im not sure your clutch will cope for long either

wow parts overload b3!!!

That Cobra Downpipe is the same one I've just had fitted, along with a silicone intake hose and restrictor pill I got 34 extra horses after remap! It sits a bit low to the ground though!

Is the Cobra Downpipe really sooty inside the pipework?

just a bit of info I found out, some of the silicone intake pipes don't fit very well on larger turbos the bend seems to shallow and kinks.
I'd recommend Perrin. I had an sfs one and the bend was to shallow, Mr noisy is a good guy to speak with about this as he has followed the same path as me and you.
very similar spec.
