The MY97/98 has the ignition coil in the middle on top of the manifold, MY99/00 has this offset to the right (if your standing at the front of the car). Pre97 don't have the coil at all. If it's an RB5 then it's MY99/00.

Mart.... why do you think they don't have coils????
The pre97s don't run wasted spark (same as the post MY01s), they have a coil on plug system (i.e 4 coils one on top of each plug). After 97 they came with the coil now sat on top of the inlet manifold... in the centre for MY97/98 and to the right on the manifold for MY99/00. These use a wasted spark system. Not sure where you got your info from but all impreza DO come with coils.

Mart, although you say you have an MY96, this was the year
(as you prolly know) that the facelift was introduced,
which means you can get '96 registered cars with coil packs on top
of engine, or the older version down the sides.
If yours are on top, sounds like you have a '96 registerd car , but is actually an MY97.
I think if it was registered post sept 96 , it will be an MY97.
(Like mine is)
Cheers
