FOR SALE - Prodrive Development RB320
For Sale.
A very special piece of motoring history!!
The Prodrive Development RB320 – The car that started it all – Registration BJ56 OJS as featured in the official posters and brochures, Subaru UK Press release and all of the motoring press articles including Auto Express and Subaru official video. (See links below to view all of these items)
The car also comes with a very nice history file which includes only 1 previous owner which shows as Subaru UK/Prodrive with all of the servicing having been carried out by Prodrive before it was purchased by me which in itself is extremely special.
Included in the history file are unreleased press photographs in both printed and electronic format of Damon Hill and Peter Solberg driving the car. Also included is a copy of the Official RB320 brochure with the car and registration clearly shown. The widely available press photos taken at Snetterton are also included.
For those who are not too hot on their RB320 History, Subaru released the special edition Impreza WRX STI in memory of rally hero Richard Burns who died of cancer.
There were 320 cars released for sale all of which were individually numbered. The most sought after car 001 was auctioned for the Richard Burns Foundation Charity which was set up in his memory.
This car being the “Unnumbered Development Car” is very sought after and recognized where ever it goes. (See links below to forum posts where individuals have seen and photographed the car)
Called the RB320, the car featured around £6,000 worth of extra equipment including the 320 PS Prodrive Performance Pack.
Available only in Obsidian Black, the RB320 featured bespoke 18 ins alloy wheels and specially developed Prodrive suspension comprising Bilstein dampers, a sports spring kit with revised rear anti-roll bar and a ride height lowered by 30 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear.
Also standard on the RB320 was a chrome mesh front grille, front lip spoiler, quick shift gear change, side sill plates and RB320-branded gear ****, carpet mats and exclusive exterior badging.
The PPP boosts power to 320 PS at 6,000 rpm with torque reaching 332 lb ft at 3,700 rpm. This reduces
the 0-60 mph time to 4.8 seconds with a 0-100 mph time of 12.2 seconds.
There were a number of additional extras available to those buying the RB320, being the development car it had everything fitted to show prospective owners what was available:
Audio Enhancement Pack which comprised of a Touch screen DVD/Sat Nav/TV Unit including IPod connector and telephone Bluetooth (£1750+VAT Fitted)
RB320 embroidered black leather and alcantara seat and door trims (£1500+VAT Fitted)
3m Panther “Autofilm” window tints (£405+VAT Fitted)
The car is currently still under full manufacturer’s warranty from Subaru UK and International Motors to give any prospective buyer full peace of mind.
It has recently been fitted with 4 New Toyo R888 tyres at a cost of £185 each and has had a full 12 months worth of road tax at a cost of £400.
Being a black car it had a few minor swirl marks and I had it fully detailed including machine polishing and 3 coats of Carnauba Wax to make the body work look better than it did when it left the factory.
I am a member of the RB320 Owners Club and the car is looked after with no expense spared. It has the best oil money can buy every 1000 miles. The next official service is not due until November and it is a minor service.
There has been 1 very sensible after market part fitted to the car – A set of Defi Oil Temperature, Oil Pressure and Boost Gauges. These are vital in ensuring the car is always allowed to warm up and cool down fully every time it is driven. Those with turbo cars will know how unreliable the standard temperature gauges are as they measure water/coolant temperature and I did not want to take any chances with such a special car so fitted the latest Defi BF gauges at a cost of £600.
These are extremely accurate at measuring the oil temperature and the car is always allowed the full 10 minutes it takes before the oil temperature is above 90 before being driven on boost, and is always allowed to idle for at least 5 minutes to allow the temperature to settle back down nicely again before switching the engine off.
The gauges are located in a Carbon surround situated in the centre of the dash, replacing the original clock – The clock and surround has been retained so that the gauges can be removed and the car can be put back to standard if required with nobody knowing the gauges were ever fitted and no damage to the interior caused.
As with most development cars they are normally driven hard by the press and manufacturer, before purchasing this car it underwent a full engine strip down and inspection by Prodrive and came to me as good as new or I would never have accepted the car.
Despite the concerns people normally have about Development cars I have only had 1 issue, the car started to show signs of high Oil use about 6 months after I took delivery.
Subaru UK sent there UK Technical Director up to Scotland to meet me personally and to oversee the diagnosis of the problem due to the special history of the car. It turned out that 1 of the piston rings was allowing oil to pass and the engine underwent a full strip down and repair to cure the issue once and for all.
Since then it has performed well with no oil use present what so ever, in fact I probably use more oil wiping the dipstick than it burns itself!
Those who know the Subaru brand will be aware of some issues with the STI springs from Bilstein, this car has been checked and the suspension was found to be fully serviceable less than 500 miles ago – Please be aware that Subaru UK are no longer honoring warranty claims on this fault if you are considering buying another RB320 or STI which has not been checked, this could turn out to be a very expensive oversight!
Summary
1 Owner
24k Miles
Full Service History
Still under full Manufacturers Warranty
4 New Tyres
Full Car Tax
The car has been priced to sell and sell quickly, if you look at other RB320’s for sale with no special history you will see that they range in price from as high as 24k with similar mileage.
None of them have the traceable roots and fantastic history that this car has being the very first one built and having featured so heavily in the press with a nice history file available.
The fact that the car was owned by Prodrive and serviced by them, and having been used for the development of all the other numbered cars makes it very special. If you are looking for a very unique and recognizable RB320 and thought they were out of your price range then this is the car for you!
More than happy for any inspection to be carried out and for any potential purchaser to drive the car if they are able to provide proof of Insurance or available funds. Apologies if this causes problems however I hope you will appreciate this is no ordinary Subaru, if you do not have insurance or cleared funds I am more than happy to take you out on a passenger ride to demonstrate the handling characteristics and performance of the car.
The car is located in Central Scotland happy to pick up any potential purchasers at either Glasgow or Edinburgh airports or refund travelling costs for the lucky buyer if that helps ease the worry of travelling all the way to Scotland to view the car.
Open to sensible offers for a quick sale – I would love the car to go to a fellow enthusiast who will appreciate the car for what it is and cherish it, hopefully joining the RB320 owners Club and continuing to help raise funds for the Richard Burns Foundation and attending meets throughout the Country with the car as I have done.
No Part Ex offers please and No Canvassers.
The choice is entirely yours – A Development RB320 which is recognized by those in the Subaru and wider community and has been looked after without expense priced at an extremely attractive rate or one of the run of the mill numbered cars with no special history for between 3 and 5k more!
Don’t be put off by those who will say it has been thrashed because it was a press car, the car was given a full detailed inspection by the best in the business Prodrive before I bought it and had everything it needed before coming to me, I bought it because of the amazing history and for that alone this car has been worth it.
I am only selling because initially I wanted a big power Evo for track use but I have the opportunity to buy a Nissan R35 GTR which I am hoping to complete on before the end of June.
£17995 - ONO for a quick sale.
