New tyres for hawk sti - Advice

Alright, i'm looking for 4 tyres for my car, standard 17" wheels so 225/45-17. I have read that they came out of the factory on RE070's which are available from camskill (I have tried funky tyres, but they haven't replied to anybodies messages on facebook/forums for days) so i'l have to use camskill.

Anybody recommend anything else other than the RE070's ? I have heard good things about the eagle f1's but the sidewall isn't a stiff and apparently can feel it flex a little in the corners.

michelin pilot sports etc ? Want 4 decent tyres, not overly fussed about wet performance as I drive like miss daisy in the wet anyway.

GeeDee 11 March 2014 06:42 PM

Bit confused  you are concerned about new tyres not having a sidewall as stiff as an RE070, which are impregnated with tyre viagra during manufacture, but you drive like Miss Daisy in the wet. :wonder:

If you get the XL F1s I don't think you will have any complaints with them in the handling department and you won't have to drive like Miss Daisy in the wet because they are brilliant. Need to bump the pressures up a bit though to get the full benefit.

Eagle f1 XL are looking like a strong alternative.

Yoko AD08R are a great tyre.
Pretty good in wet, just not in standing water at high speeds (but what is?).

I have got Bridgestone S001s on mine. So far been very impressed with wet and dry performance. Not sure how quick they will wear though as I havent had them that long. They would appear to be a noticeable improvement over the RE-050As I had on previously.

I too have tried Eagle F1 Asymmetric and found the sidewalls too soft so wouldnt go back to them although the Asymmetric 2s are supposedly better.

I also would advise caution before fitting extra load tyres. The standard RE070 load index for 225/45-17 tyres is 90 however most other tyres that size have a standard load index of 91 with the extra load tyres being 94. If you go too far with the load index on a tyre you will take out any flex which means the tyre wont properly adapt to the changing of the road surface and as a result you wont have optimum grip accross the contact patch of the tyre on the road.

I wonder if this is why I feel that grip on bumpy road road surfaces isn't ideal owing to the "suspension" hopping and skipping. :wonder:

I shall have to investigate further in my quest for a sensible balance between road holding and comfort. I had it on my Classic WRX but have failed miserably with my Spec D.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport, the best tyre I have tried.

Thats exactly what was happening on my Spec D with XL tyres. Although I was running JDM pink springs at the time so probably a litle worse than you due to the increased firmness over UK springs.

Do remember that the Impreza is a heavy beast, something like 150 kgs heavier than the current Focus ST.

I have Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's, 225/45 R17 Y 94. Much better than the old Toyo's which did their best impression of a crash at the slightest sight of rain, drizzle, puddles, general moisture or cold weather.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 on my spec d are very good. Wet grip is excellent Very predictable.

Granted but the standard load index for the hawkeye STI is 90 which equates to 600KG per tyre which more than takes care of the weight of the car.

I haven't driven too much on the wet as I had them on during last summer only but they stick like **** to a blanket.

I haven't managed to get the rear out something that could easily happen with other tyres.

Thanks for that, think I will try them, have the ps3 on the car now which I like.

Hi there

I can highly recommend Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta, those tyres has been proven by many people over here and we are used them on our wagon at 490bhp and when wagon run 555.5bhp,we are never struggled in heavy rain or in wet,we are never have any issue with them like on track or drag strip, although they never will be good as Toyo R888 or AD08 on the track or drag strip

Thanks,Jura

The Vreds Ultrac Sessanta are good for the money (had them before the PSS) but the PSS have a lot more grip.

gregwill 12 March 2014 06:02 PM

+1 for Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta

BrownPantsRacing 12 March 2014 06:15 PM

Had a few, Goodyear Eagle F1's are best so far for me in all conditions!

beardo47 12 March 2014 06:15 PM

Had a look at the michelin pss but they aint available in 225 45 17 :(. Heard good things about the vreds. Whats the dry grip on the vreds like compared to the re070?

stealthbomber 12 March 2014 11:31 PM

I've switched from Goodyear eagle f1 to vredestein ultrac sessantas and so far am very impressed. Grip seems as good as the f1, sure footed in the wet, they're not twitchy and they are also quieter. £40 cheaper for alll four fitted too. Give them a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

GeeDee 15 March 2014 12:24 PM

stealthbomber

XL or standard tyres on which car please?

stealthbomber 15 March 2014 04:38 PM

XL on a bug wrx wagon
