Antivirus/Security software recommendations?

Afternoon,

My current Internet Security software licence expires in a couple of days. I'm after advice on a decent package, which doesn't hog memory and sits nicely in the background and does it's job.

Any recommendations?

I have been using this for 7 years and never had a virus, and its free :luxhello:

For Windows?

Microsoft Security Essentials is all you need, fast and free (if your Windows install is legit).

It's not the best but it is very good for the price :)

It is what I use along with safescript/noscipt on my browsers.

If I had to pay and wanted a decent one, then ESET Nod32 would win every time

mike1210 13 February 2014 04:36 PM

Yep Nod32 for me also

BTW the Microsoft one is really falling behind now, far better free ones such as Avast and Avira that would protect you better.

Crowman 13 February 2014 05:08 PM

I've always used avast free , never had any issues

A third Nod for ESET.

Brun 13 February 2014 09:40 PM

Nod here : thumb:

I actually use Norton. Never had an issue with it myself but people do say it hogs resources.

RICHARD J 13 February 2014 10:06 PM

Norton for me, you can use your subscription on 3 devices at no extra cost so good value if you have more than one computer.

Of the free ones Avast or Bitdefender free - paid would be Kaspersky or Nod 32
Easy to get full legit versions of the paid ones from ebay at V reasonable prices

Something to bare in mind when considering MS Security Essentials.

I like the Trend Micro stuff but I would say that ;)

Nod is cool, Microsoft is shoit, avast does the job but at the end of the day it's about not actually exposing yourself to threats in the first place, although it's not always that that is the problem :)

Rapid17 17 February 2014 03:45 PM

I use Avast free and have never had any problems.

Littleted 17 February 2014 07:02 PM

tried bit defender, eventually sacked it off after a year, now use Norton. But in all honesty.

Security essentials for win7 is good or win8 defender same thing really..
if you need a 2nd line then just get a free one.

The other thing to remember is that AV software isn't 100% protection. We see plenty of PCs at work which have some sort of virus or malware on them, yet the AV is happily claiming life is good.

True. Plus, just endpoint protection and traditional AV or security (including firewalls etc.) doesn't really do the trick anymore.

Absolutely correct, a good reason to switch to a Mac.

johned 18 February 2014 05:34 PM

Avast free and malwarebytes free.

lol Jack ;) , Macs stopped being the safe haven from targeted attacks a while ago. :)

stiscooby 18 February 2014 08:53 PM

Kaspersky.

If you happen to bank with Barclays you can get it free and install it on 3x machines.

I can assure you you're still very much safer using a Mac.

It's called discussion, you might not have noticed but this is a discussion board. If someone mentions that Antivirus protection is not enough then that brings up a discussion on what can help, that's how discussion works. Buying a Mac will definitely help and will save you money in the long run.
