Default Antivirus/Security software recommendations?

Afternoon,

My current Internet Security software licence expires in a couple of days. I'm after advice on a decent package, which doesn't hog memory and sits nicely in the background and does it's job.

Any recommendations?

For Windows?

Microsoft Security Essentials is all you need, fast and free (if your Windows install is legit).

It's not the best but it is very good for the price

It is what I use along with safescript/noscipt on my browsers.

If I had to pay and wanted a decent one, then ESET Nod32 would win every time

Yep Nod32 for me also

BTW the Microsoft one is really falling behind now, far better free ones such as Avast and Avira that would protect you better.

I actually use Norton. Never had an issue with it myself but people do say it hogs resources.

Norton for me, you can use your subscription on 3 devices at no extra cost so good value if you have more than one computer.

Of the free ones Avast or Bitdefender free - paid would be Kaspersky or Nod 32
Easy to get full legit versions of the paid ones from ebay at V reasonable prices

I like the Trend Micro stuff but I would say that

Nod is cool, Microsoft is shoit, avast does the job but at the end of the day it's about not actually exposing yourself to threats in the first place, although it's not always that that is the problem

tried bit defender, eventually sacked it off after a year, now use Norton. But in all honesty.

Security essentials for win7 is good or win8 defender same thing really..
if you need a 2nd line then just get a free one.

The other thing to remember is that AV software isn't 100% protection. We see plenty of PCs at work which have some sort of virus or malware on them, yet the AV is happily claiming life is good.

True. Plus, just endpoint protection and traditional AV or security (including firewalls etc.) doesn't really do the trick anymore.

Absolutely correct, a good reason to switch to a Mac.

Kaspersky.

If you happen to bank with Barclays you can get it free and install it on 3x machines.

It's called discussion, you might not have noticed but this is a discussion board. If someone mentions that Antivirus protection is not enough then that brings up a discussion on what can help, that's how discussion works. Buying a Mac will definitely help and will save you money in the long run.
