3D at home - discussion

Was telling a mate about my new TV , and when I mentioned 3D and the fact that I dont have anything that "outputs" in 3D , it's a pointless feature for me at the moment. He told me that all I needed to do was activate my Sky 3D at no xtra cost. Just did it today and it works quite well. Now there are movies on the Sky 3D channel , but as I dont have the Movies package I assume I won't be able to watch them. Also , no matter what I am playing through the TV , I can push the 3D button and it "makes" it into 3D , but not as good as a dedicated source.

Now here is my question. My bluray player isnt 3D , so it wont play a 3D bluray. But how can my Sky box do it , and my TV can (kind of) make 2D into 3D , but I have to buy a new bluray player if I want to watch a 3D bluray disc ?

Now I know its a gimmick and most people don't rate it , but I'm a bit of a nerd and was just wondering. I won't be buying a new Bluray player anytime soon , but when HD first came out I got a bit carried away and got a HD ready TV before I heard of "full HD" , and I got an HD DVD player for my Xbox before Bluray took off , then I got my Bluray player and a ton of films when they were twice the price as now !

Sky 3D is different it's SBS (side by side) 3D

If you view the sky 3D picture on a non 3D tv you. You Get two near enough identical picture in the screen SBS

Your blu ray player probably doesn't support hdmi 1.4

Ant 04 January 2014 05:10 PM

As for your tv turning it to 3d it's just software doing it and IMO looks terrible

bustaMOVEs 04 January 2014 05:56 PM

There is only 1 channel afaik on sky that has 3d and not the best quality IMO compared to a bluray 3d player.
Just like the sky hd channels that only stream at 720i I belive unlike a hd player that will do the full 1080p and not 1080i which some people confuse which is not actually 'full' hd.

Not forgetting with 3d you have to wear glasses which is not my thing watching a film with apperatious on my head. (3d is good I would say, watched parrana 3d and I must say did love the underwater scenes but can't justify the hassle that comes with it tbh)

Good old fashion watching tv like a normal person with a good quality tv wins every time for me.

CharlySkunkWeed 04 January 2014 06:35 PM

Sky HD is 1080i , the 3D channel seems pretty good to me. Watched some Attenborough thing about dinosaurs , the CGi wasn't jumping out , but the real stuff was good. I watched Final destination 3d , it was on channel 4HD , I put my TV onto 3D mode and it didn't do much if anything at all ! I seen it in the cinema at the time and I remember it was brilliant , but the effort my TV made was pointless.

So basically I need a 3D bluray player to get any use of the TV ? I see there is a program i can buy for my laptop (has a Bluray drive) that says it does BD , 3D and 4k ! Suppose that's the next con . . . I mean latest tech . 4k looks cool , but some money !

I will never think 3D at home is worth it,it only makes sense if you have a massive tv.SJ.

Yes, came across it and posted it on hotukdeals to see if its any good, incredibly it is. Ok it has some minor flows, but for the money :D

Bluray player and 4 pairs of glasses was the deal breaker for me :thumb:

What do you deem as massive.... my main TV is 55" and 3D is still wank in all reality.

I was going to upgrade my projector to 3D (100" viewing screen at present).... but that REALLY would be a waste of cash. :lol1:

About this size,That screen size would do nicely:D.SJ.

I thought most of the people in the know had already stated 3D at home was dead and buried.

yabbadoo4 04 January 2014 10:28 PM

3d at home is quality, i have both a telly and a projector and love them both. dont get me wrong i dont watch it all the time but a few times a week at least. space or underwater documentaries are great in 3d and animation really works well with it.

Yeah , and anything that's deliberately 3D is good too , rather than just a normal film "made" into 3D. Some things just don't need to be 3D ( imo)

Its 1080i split into 2 pictures 960x1080i which are deinterlaced by an active shutter TV to look like 1920x1080i (1920 is the horizontal resolution split into 2 halves by the screen the vertical ie 1080i is not touched).

ScoobyJawa 06 January 2014 11:50 AM

I personally find the quality of 3D and picture at home with my Panny ST50 which has Active glasses much better than at the cinema.

Jonnys3 06 January 2014 03:05 PM

The Playstation 3 also doubles up as a 3D bluray player, so you can play 3D games and watch 3D blurays through the one device. Worth a punt given how much they've come down in price now. 3D is certainly not dead and buried in our household.

CharlySkunkWeed 06 January 2014 05:41 PM

Unfortunately I'm an Xbox man , so no such luck !

richie001 06 January 2014 05:56 PM

Already been posted...Go out and buy a 3D blueray player :thumb:

STI Glenn 06 January 2014 06:12 PM

Who is it??

3d is really more of a gimmick as you sit there watching the film for only about three things actually worth watching in 3d in the film, I prefer to watch a normal blueray of the film as I don't have to keep my eyes fixed to the tv because of the glasses.

I wouldn't bother unless the 3d technology in the projectors has moved on, I have the 3d Optoma and I'm not that impressed with how it looks.

Already got a bluray player , I'm not wasting cash getting getting a new one just for 3D if it's not up to much.

Really? I have a WT50 and found it headache-inducing and strobey as hell.

The only place I will willingly watch something in 3D is at an IMAX

ScoobyJawa 07 January 2014 12:24 PM

Yep, the quality of the 3D is outstanding IMHO. At the cinema being passive it always seems to me to be a bit blurry and shimmery round the edges.

Watching Prometheus on my ST (with official Panny 3D glasses) it was sharp and awesome!

Even my wife who is a complete technophobe agrees!

farmerwrx 07 January 2014 01:54 PM

Just bought these the tv is due to be delivered today and the blu-ray player in a day or so, I'm looking forward to experiencing this new stuff as we are still using old gear at the moment

I have the UT50 cheapest in the range but the best for 3D as it goes without the dimming screen filter.

If you want a huge 3D TV and also like gaming there are only 2 TV's currently on the market worth looking at. Those two are the SONY 905 and 805 models, with the all important Lag input down to negligible.

I run one of the best gaming TV's (UT50) but even at 40ms it's just too unresponsive for accurate sniping. Even on the rugby games I have to pass extra early.

Just run a lag switch to compensate :D

Just spotted a setting on my xbox for 3d games , does this that mean I can stream LoveFilm though it to my TV ?
