Best front mount intercooler kit for 04 sti

As above. What's the best all round kit?

the shreksta 10 November 2013 06:14 PM

these seem popular...........

I think it's best to state a budget with such a question. Intercoolers seem to have a bigger price gulf than most other components between top end and an acceptable "product for the masses". Japspeed seem to sell plenty of kits for £300 on here, all well received but I've also seen kits of £2-3k+

jake1989 10 November 2013 06:45 PM

for a road car i dont think you can go wrong with the japspeed fmic
good all round and does the job nicely for only £2-300
i used one on my blobeye and was happy all round

Steve T 10 November 2013 07:20 PM

Very happy with my Japspeed.:thumb: Steve.

thenewgalaxy 10 November 2013 07:32 PM

Someone told me Perrins are good

toyney83 10 November 2013 07:36 PM

Hyperflow monster

mantazini 10 November 2013 07:50 PM

All depends on your budget and targets.

Japspeed , HDI 200-500
Perrin, Hyperflow, APS 1k+

Standart STI TMIC is a quality kit too ...

mazmike 10 November 2013 09:30 PM

spec-r

MattyB1983 10 November 2013 09:37 PM

Best or cheapest ???
A £250 kit will do the job pretty well but can't be compared to the likes of this....

Myself and thunder8 are currently mid way through fitting a japspeed front mount to his car. While the core itself seems decent enough for the money the pipe work leaves alot to be desired.

Moley 10 November 2013 09:41 PM

I have a Japspeed one that I got for £199 on here.

However, after changing the silicone hoses to SFS ones, and replacing the clamps with Murray clamps, plus the DV adaptor kit, paint and heat wrap, the cost was nearer £450.

the hdi one i bought came with all those parts from harvey for about the price it cost you there. obviously not painted though

Moley 10 November 2013 09:55 PM

If I did it again I'd probably go for the HDI kit, although I did like choosing the SFS hoses and Murray clamps to get it to the spec I wanted.

The hoses that came with the kit would probably be ok, but I wanted better quality.
And after blowing a boost pipe off on the way home from having it mapped, the Murray clamps were a no-brainer.

Which pipe did you 'lose'?
I used 'bulge' hoses in a couple of places where there was some misalignment.

Passenger side, where the 180 degree pipe joins the one that goes behind the rad

scoobyboy1 11 November 2013 11:28 AM

Ive a Japspeed FMIC on my hawk, think there £299 new, which makes it not to bad when I have to cut the pipes up when I do a reversed inlet mod!!!

Dont think i would like to cut the intercooler pipes up if I had paid over £1k for a kit!!

Infected by sti 11 November 2013 11:33 AM

Newage japspeed kits are £199 Bargain for what they are really all things considered for the power goals most people wish to achieve.

I've got a hdi on mine but don't like the pipe work design of under the car and up the back of the bulkhead, I've caught the floor with it a few times, May have been the person who installed it granted (before my time) but I've now changed the piping to the japspeed kit, much better IMO

scoobyboy1 11 November 2013 11:45 AM

£199 brand new??? Mine was fitted when I bought the car too. Had to re-do all the clamps as I had one come flying off when I was on boost!! Thought my engine had gone pop with how loud it was!!

Lucky for me it broke down outside Halfords and managed to get some tools to put it back on and tighten all of them up!!!!!

Infected by sti 11 November 2013 12:22 PM

I'm using the pipe work coupled with all the clamps I currently have with my hdi cooler, not because I didn't want to use the newer ones but mine looked a bit thicker, if the clamps are fully tightened then they shouldn't slip off the rounded ends, I'm guessing the clamps work loose at a stab then guys :wonder:

Yea £199 advertised on here for, that's what I mean for the money you can't really go wrong, perfectly suited to the lower - medium power applications

ditchmyster 11 November 2013 01:04 PM

There is a little trick to help avoid the hoses blowing off, hair spray before you put them on and it helps them to stick and stay put, obviously make the clamps good and tight too.:thumb:

HDi kits for performance.

If you're not bothered by performance, then you could just opt for a cheapo kit, but you will be leaving power on the table.

dunc told me this when i had a hose pop off when it was being mapped, i thought he was on a wind up:lol1:

ditchmyster 11 November 2013 03:23 PM

Yeah, but what I want to know is who and how they found out.:Suspiciou

As for dunc, that's his excuse for having a can in the car.:D

scoobyboy1 11 November 2013 03:51 PM

Have run Japspeed FMIC at 490bhp without the issue and on our one pipes never blow off like on mapping or on the track or road

I can only recommend Japespeed FMIC,great piece of kit for good money

Moley 12 November 2013 08:17 PM

Time for the hairspray........

Therein lies the false economy. Yes, people will say they ran theirs at XXXbhp, but how much power/performance did they lose by not running a better intercooler?

The HDi coolers run 850bhp+, have better flow and lower pressure drop. An intercoolers job is to reduce charge temps, but it should do so with the best flow and least pressure drop.

There's a lab in the UK that tests intercoolers for race teams, manufacturers etc. I would love to see a £199 cooler up against a HDi cooler. We'll foot the bill of testing the HDi cooler, will any supplier put up a £199 cooler though for thorough testing with the results published in public - doubtful.

What's the effect of the cheaper coolers with higher pressure drop vs HDi coolers with low pressure drop?

For what it would cost why don't you buy a cheapo cooler and get them both tested?

Aztec Performance Ltd 13 November 2013 02:19 PM

Simply because it's not cheap :)

The question is why wouldn't another supplier put their product up and foot their part of the bill?

Cost is around £650+ VAT per intercooler.
