Steering wheel shaking
I have a bad problem with the steering wheel shaking when I get to 60mph and the fast I go the worse it gets and when driving around town at normal speeds the car just feels very disconnected. I thought it could of possibly been the wheels that were unbalanced, so got them checked yesterday and all are fine.
Any suggestions guys? as I need this sorted ASAP. Thanks Matt. |
When did the problem start..... Meaning what happened in between the time it was ok and now?

Could be any number of suspension bushes or a track rod end. Even a snapped spring.

If all the components are in good condition (including tyres) then I'd check wheel alignment.

Bad break disc? One may be warped and catching in a seized caliper?? Mine felt a bit unbalance when I got it, it had been sitting 2 years and all the calipers were seized in one way or another. I repaired all that and everything is fine now.

I would say your wheels need balancing mate as normally if they are out of balance you don't feel anything at low speeds but steering wheel will shake bad above 60mph
|
I was thinking that, but he said he got them checked though?
|
If I was you I would get them checked your self at a good tyre centre as they might not of been done properly or you could have lost a wheel weight, also make sure you haven't got a buckled wheel
|
Had exactly the same problem I thought it was the track rod ends it wasn't it was the hub to lower arm ball joint I changed that and it sorted it on mine
|
Thanks for all the replays, I will get the wheels checked again in the week to make sure they are not buckled in any way and try again. Failing that, it is booked in with surrey Subaru specialists (Dan) to have some other work carried out in 2 weeks, so will get him to investergate the problem.

When I had similar and re-balancing didn't cure it, it turned out to be an oval tyre.

I might try swapping the front and back wheels over to see if it feels any different.

As alcazar said have heard that a few times could be oval tyre so deffo worth changing them over have you tried jacking up the front of car and feeling if anything has any play in it at all????

had this on mine finally got it solved!!
1st checked everything was tight under the bonnet, battery etc 2nd my tracking was out on the front 3rd, my front tyres looked fine! - But the tracking was out which screwed them on the inside, so switch the rears to the front |
sounds very much like a buckled wheel. A car I bought years ago had buckled fronts. The salesman advised me not to go on the motoway as the car was low on fuel when i test drove it. Clearly knew the car had the issue. Despite calling him as soon as I got home after a visit to the tyre shop, surprisingly he said the wheels were fine when i bought the car. Was fuming to say the least. Hope it's something simple for u to fix!

Well I haven't had a chance to swap the wheels over yet, but I'm getting all of them checked tomorrow to see if any are buckled.
|
Have you looked at the brakes too? I've had a shaky steering wheel on a couple of cars and it's always because of the caliper sticking, sending vibrations through the steering column.
