Measures to prevent ringland.

We've recently added another impreza to the family, a 2008 STI hatch. It's had a FSH and since we've had it I've got all the belts changed, oil changed, new pads and discs and new front drop links.

My question is, bar taking the engine out is there another cost effective way to preventing ringland failure, ie map tweak? I've heard of dropping in forged pistons but does this not require the engine out? Just trying to price things up. O by the way I should mention its totally standard bar a Pro-R filter with 50k on the clock.

Cheers chaps.

Luck of the draw it seems, Only way to remove the worry would be forged items and yes the engine would need to come out :thumb:

On the std motor, remap for saftey and don't go over 1.3bar for the target boost i.e. around the 350-370bhp mark.

It's the missus's car so she only wants a basic map really, aiming for 330/330, wouldn't want it to be quicker than mine ;)

Shopping list includes, Cat back, lowering springs and new alloys, O and red rear lens covers.

I'd rather hold it back a bit in the map anyway just to keep things safer. If it goes after a year then I'm not to bothered and yes we will forge it but as we've just spent so much on getting it to a good base standard I'd rather not have to shell out for forgeing just yet.

Got one thanks

I'd just forge it tbh mate, better £2.5k now than £5k in a year or sooner, at the moment it's just a case of dropping some new pistons in and a gasket set possibly bearings too, but once it lets go your talking rods, crank, modine, oil pump, bearings, sump, etc the list is kind of endless once your in, I think it's worth it for peace of mind, i'd always be wondering when it's going to let go not if.

If you have the money better to spend less now imo.

I saw david @ api quote £2.5k if it hasn't failed, I'm sure other builders would be similar money.

I'd give Tim Farmer a call.;)

As it happens I've just spoken to David at API, extremely helpful. I think there's no doubt now I'll get forged pistons ect..Don't have the budget now but hopefully I'll get it done sonner rather than later. Compression test will put my mind at ease for the short term.

I rebuilt 4 x 2.5's recently, 2 of them were 2008 Hatch STI's, both under 40K fsh etc, both had broken ringlands and the bearings (big end) were down to the copper!

Jesus! :(

Presumably the bearings were due to bore wash, or is there some other reason for this.

40k is terrible.
