04 Sti ride very hard

Just picked the sti and on the motorway the car was bouncing and felt very hard, is this normal for a standard car?

tubbytommy 29 March 2013 08:57 PM

no

ditchmyster 29 March 2013 09:00 PM

Lol, thats exactly what i thought when i test drove a new one in 2004 between that and the crappy gear change/ratio's made me opt for a WRX.

Enjoy.:lol1:

Guess it depends on what car you have come from? Also depends on what your idea of stiff/hard is. It may not be on standard springs but prodrive which will be a little harder over the standard sti set up.

Has it got standard 17" wheels on it?

kwan88 29 March 2013 09:55 PM

its on standard alloys with the oem re70 tyres. Do you think it could be tyre pressures? I have come from a rx8 and cupra r? Also compared it to my friends integra type r dc2 and its a harder ride.

davedipster 29 March 2013 10:13 PM

When the rear shocks fail and bind up, the ride becomes very hard. My 2003 sti did the same.

Luckyscoob 30 March 2013 02:31 PM

The tyres wont help the cause. They have very firm side walls and with the tread pattern feel considerably harder than say Goodyear eagles. I changed my bridgestones when they were worn for eagle F1's and the difference in the ride was unbelievable. Having said that, the bridgestones were awesome when warm and much grippier.

Also, the rear end of an STI can feel 'bouncy' on standard springs. I always found it a bit scary, but changed to Prodrive springs which were alot better.

kwan88 30 March 2013 02:52 PM

Checked the tyre pressures and the front was only 2 bar so changed this to manual 2.3 bar. Also the rears had too much pressure so reduced back to 1.9 bar from 2.2 bar. Not been on a motorway since but will try tonight.

Whats funny is that my head is moving around as the car bounces and my eyes are just all over the place. Maybe its age related or i need more time to get used to an sti. I would have thought that a road car would be a bit more softer. What does a 911 turbo ride like then?

Better than a standard STi, as are most cars lol. But then try throwing a 911 turbo into a sharp bend at speed and see what happens!!!

I get this in my GB270 Wagon. Only had it a month, and yes it is on 18s and lower prodrive springs as standard, but wasn't expecting it to be quite like this on motorways in places. Gonna get the suspension checked out, although service history shows springs being replaced in March.

Otherwise, may have to pass on to someone else to have the fun - medium length drives resulting in googly eyes and headaches not great! :freak3:

(Had a classic Wagon 10 years ago, this is my first return to a Scooby and thought it would be better than this! Faded memories or something wrong with the motor .....will find out soon).

After a few months and long drives over 125 miles, you get used to it, unless its not your daily drive?

rogerramjet 09 November 2013 11:43 AM

Yeah - I think that's it, will get used to it again! I have my old beemer as well at the moment, but driving the GB270 as daily from January.

:lol1: class.

I've got visions of buzz eyed STI drivers with googly eyed syndrome, now I know why a few on here think their STI's are sooooo fantastic, it's because their brains have been pounded into mushy peas, explains everything. :lol1:

God help anyone who wants to come in my car haha! The Tein monoflex even on the softest setting feels like you have run over a cow every time you hit a cats eye!

Put it on the hard setting and the Mrs's fun bags make a break for it :D A mod that has paid for its self time and time again :D

bustaMOVEs 10 November 2013 08:25 AM

Glanza, I would say that tien mono flex absorbe bumps very well compared to few out there, you sure there not mono pro or something?

Op I think you have some egay suspension in there somewhere by the review.

Fonzey 10 November 2013 10:02 AM

My STI suspension was fine in terms of harshness. I'd say it was too wallowy if anything.

Agreed, I had the JDM STI pink set up when I bought mine, and it was still very soft and wollowy (is that a word?:))
