Anyone on here run (or ran) an R35 GT-R?

I have been agonising over buying one of these for well over a year now and have just about convinced myself. I will be very sad to part with my beloved STI after 6 years of problem-free driving, but all good things must come to an end... I have found a very promising-looking white one, just need a final push to commit myself!

It's not so much the cost of buying the GT-R that puts me off, but the worries I guess everyone has about buying expensive sports cars - will anything major go wrong with it? I don't do high mileage (and own a 2nd car for going to work/the shops in), and am obviously used to relatively high bills with the Scoob.

Anyway, I'd be extremely interested to hear comments from anyone with 'real world' experience of owning one. I know I can ask on the GT-R forum, but I thought I'd ask on here as well, as I've had a lot of valuable advice on here over the 9 years I've owned Scoobs.

mate has one, when it needs something hes always complaining about it, when it doesnt its all good lol

tyres 1k for 4 which isnt too bad...
if the gearbox goes though and its not under warranty its around £12k iirc

grahamc 20 February 2013 11:01 AM

Theres a couple of us :)

I have now owned mine for 1.5 years and have had very little hassle. I have had 1 warranty claim on the headlights (had water inside) which were replaced. I have also had the standard bellhousing issue, which I chose to skip the warranty for and went for an aftermarket solution. Not that expensive to run, a little more cost wise to the scooby I owned. However the next step for me, 600bhp-700+ is a bit of a big one.......

Most gearbox issues these days are not a full replacement, most can be rebuilt for substantially less....

lordretsudo 20 February 2013 11:05 AM

That (the gearbox thing) is the sort of thing that concerns me. I accept the tyres/brakes/servicing is going to be costly, and that's fair enough, but I don't like the thought of major (i.e. thousands of pounds) failures. The car I'm looking at still has a few months of warranty left, and will hopefully have had the bellhousing sorted...?

grahamc 20 February 2013 11:21 AM

Speak to whom ever you plan to use for servicing... Nissan dealers are expensive, aftermarket specialists are much cheaper.

What year model is the car that you are looking at? Is it a private sale?

Ash170990 20 February 2013 11:23 AM

dont you have to be carefull with how many times the launch control has been used? doesnt something (possibly the gearbox) need rebuilding after 5 launches or so?

Awesome cars, and would have one in a flash if i could afford it, but too rich for me at the mo lol

alloy 20 February 2013 11:30 AM

Had mine for over 3 and half years, not been trouble free but i wouldn't change a thing!

Gearbox can be fixed economically.....12k is BS. My first gearbox was replaced after 8 weeks due to solenoid issue (well known on early cars), then the replacement broke last year (syncro issue) and was repaired and upgraded for a fraction of the 12k number being banded about

Took mine down to airfield at the weekend couple of vids (note boost turned down and LC reduced)

Versus stripped, caged, GT35 2.35l STI

No, the MY11 ono software will permit 5 launches before you have to drive the car a couple of miles and then it will allow you to launch again

Who won, all I see is two cars disappearing in a load of dust.

In 2012 I spent £1142 on front tyres and two services on the GTR (I had some oil left from the previous year). I spent similar keeping my old Legacy going with wheel bearings, brake components, fan blower motor etc.

On the GTR the faults I've had the following under warranty:
Corroded tyre valves
Failed audio unit
Alternator belt tensioner
Rattling driver door lock

Looks like James(Anger) old car.

lordretsudo 20 February 2013 06:13 PM

Thanks for the comments! The car I'm looking at is a late 2009 model with low mileage. It has recently had the major 36,000 mile service and 4 new tyres fitted. It seems like an "as new" example, the only thing that concerns me is that it has had 3 owners (the first being the garage it was registered at). This seems less of a worry than normal though, given the car has full Nissan SH and also has only done 12k miles...

A lot of people can afford to buy a GTR and then shortly after realise they can't afford to run one....

Didn't people used to say that about Scoobys?

still do, considering you can spend more on engine work in a year than the cost of buying a scooby

Next year will be 6 years of running my own business, through hard work/long hours it's starting to really flourish and as long as it's doing as well as it is now I've promised myself a GTR next May (when the lease runs out on my 3 series diesel and my son will be 4 so getting himself in and out the back ;) ).
Until that time I'll just keep checking on Graham & Alloys GTR thread, drooling :thumb:

grahamc 22 February 2013 11:34 PM

We will keeping updating it for you :D

lordretsudo 23 February 2013 05:25 PM

Well, Monday is going to be final make-my-mind up time - one other thing I've realised is going to be difficult is fitting it in the garage. We have a double garage, but there's a pillar in the middle (and it's a support, so it can't be removed). I reverse the wife's A5 in on one side and the Scoob drives in on the other. The garage is 3cm longer than the GT-R and I think the width is going to be pretty tight too (though the A5 is apparently wider, including the wing mirrors). Unfortunately, there's not really any way I can test this before buying, as there are no GT-Rs for sale anywhere near where I live!

Brun 23 February 2013 07:44 PM

Don't be a fanny - worry about the storage logistics later ;-)

I would say try and get the newest version you can. If you can't stretch to a new one then one that is a year old MY11/12 with service pack and warranty. These cars can be very expensive to repair depending on the problem. So warranty is your friend :)

Completely agree, the amount of times I read about people sayin they've got £35k to buy a GT-R and they completely forget about how much these cars can cost when something goes wrong.

I've had mine a year and it's been faultless, but so it should be as I bought it new with 3 years servicing so at least I know that the basics are covered for 3 years. It's not my everyday car so only cover about 4k miles a year.
